Canada Targets First World Cup Knockout Stage at Home, Faces Switzerland Next
On Wednesday, Canada faces Switzerland in its final Group B match with a chance to move into the World Cup knockout stage for the first time while playing on home ground. Thanks to two early draws in the group, all four teams still have hopes of advancing, although the odds are slim for Qatar and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
A victory or even a draw against Switzerland would see Canada top the group and earn a round-of-32 match at BC Place in Vancouver.
Home Advantage Drives Canadian Confidence
Canada's coach, Jesse Marsch, stressed the importance of remaining in Vancouver. "Staying here in Vancouver is definitely our number one goal," he said on Tuesday.
Winger Liam Millar shared his excitement from Canada’s first World Cup game in Vancouver: "I got goose bumps during the national anthem and from the crowd. Staying here for every match would be a huge boost for us."
Switzerland Eyes Group Victory
Switzerland, the group favorite, has nearly secured a spot in the next round already. The winner of the other group match between Qatar and Bosnia could also advance.
Finishing first would give Switzerland benefits including four extra rest days and an easier tournament path. Historically, Switzerland has only won its World Cup group once, back in 2006.
"If we show our best side, I think we’re going to win tomorrow," said Swiss defender Manuel Akanji, adding he would not settle for a draw.
Canada’s Strong Start Sets Up Crucial Match
Canada opened the tournament with a commanding 6-0 win over Qatar. That big margin means a draw against Switzerland would keep them atop the group, joining hosts Mexico and the U.S. as first-place finishers.
Marsch stated, "We have a clear objective. We want to win the group." He took over as Canada’s coach in 2024.
Switzerland has shown some inconsistency, drawing 1-1 with Qatar after conceding late and leading Bosnia for only the final part of their 4-1 victory.
"The worst way to get a draw is to play for a draw," Marsch said. "We will approach this match with the mindset and tactics to win. We won’t be overly defensive or aggressive. We’re going to play our style."
