The 2026 World Cup is well underway, and the knockout rounds are beginning to take shape. The co-hosts Mexico and the United States secured their places in the Round of 32 early by topping their groups. More teams will qualify as the group stage progresses.

Mexico

With two early wins, Mexico has already sealed its spot in the Round of 32 and leads Group A. Their next opponent will be one of the third-place teams from Groups C, E, F, H, or I.

United States

USA topped Group D for only the third time in history and will face a third-place finisher from Groups B, E, F, I, or J on July 3.

Germany

Germany was the first non-North American team to qualify after a comeback win against Ivory Coast, securing first place in Group E. Their Round of 32 opponent will be a third-place team from Groups A, B, C, D, or F.

Argentina

Argentina secured their knockout spot with a win over Austria. Lionel Messi scored twice and became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. They lead their group following Algeria’s victory over Jordan.

France and Norway

France qualified after a 3-0 win against Iraq, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice. Norway joined them by edging Senegal 3-2, thanks to two goals by Erling Haaland. The group winner will be decided when these two meet on June 26.

Colombia

Colombia advanced after a late Luis Diaz goal helped them fend off DR Congo’s attacks. They could be a surprise contender in the later stages.

How the Knockout Bracket Works

The Round of 32 begins the single-elimination phase. Matches tied after 90 minutes proceed to 30 minutes of extra time. If still level, a penalty shootout decides who advances.
