Chelsea Targets Marco Palestra and Jacobo Ramon as Alonso's Era Begins
Chelsea have moved aggressively in the market again, hijacking Inter’s move for Marco Palestra and immediately casting an eye towards another Serie A revelation, Jacobo Ramon at Como.
This is not a quiet reset. It’s a statement that the Xabi Alonso project at Stamford Bridge will be built on young, multi-functional talent – and built quickly.
Alonso’s personal touch seals Palestra deal
Inter thought they had him. Atalanta were in advanced talks, the path looked clear, and Marco Palestra seemed destined for San Siro.
Then Chelsea walked in.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the London club have reached a verbal agreement with Atalanta and the player, with the Bergamo side set to receive a package worth over €55 million plus a sell-on clause for the Italy international. Palestra will sign a long-term deal and is viewed primarily as a right wing-back, but his versatility is the real prize.
He can operate on either flank, both as a full-back and wing-back. That profile fits perfectly with Alonso’s preference for dynamic, flexible wide defenders who can both overload and recover.
This wasn’t just a boardroom operation. Alonso himself stepped in to close it.
Romano reports that the incoming Chelsea manager held a direct conversation with Palestra, underlining how much he wanted him in London. La Gazzetta dello Sport added colour to that picture, revealing that Alonso told the 21-year-old he had followed him closely at Cagliari and had been struck by his “English-style physicality”. The Spaniard even dipped into Italian during the chat, a detail that says plenty about how seriously he takes the recruitment of key pieces.
Palestra will walk into a competitive full-back unit. On the right, he is expected to battle Malo Gusto. On the left, he offers fresh energy in an area where Marc Cucurella has recently moved on. For Alonso, it’s another young, mouldable defender, the type he embraced and trusted at Bayer Leverkusen.
Chelsea have paid heavily for that potential. But the club clearly believe they are buying a long-term pillar for both flanks.
Chelsea circle Como’s Ramon
The push into Italy does not stop in Bergamo.
Romano also revealed that Chelsea are tracking Jacobo Ramon, the 21-year-old Spanish centre-back who has just helped Como secure Champions League football under Cesc Fabregas.
Ramon, who joined Como from Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, emerged as one of the standout performers for the club last season. His rise has been sharp, his reputation growing in parallel with Fabregas’s impressive work on the touchline.
Chelsea’s interest in Ramon initially grew out of a different conversation. Como asked about Trevoh Chalobah, but quickly hit a financial wall: the Chelsea defender is currently too expensive for the newly resurgent Italian side. During those talks, Chelsea flipped the discussion and inquired about Ramon.
He is not the only name under consideration. Romano stresses that Chelsea have four or five centre-backs on their shortlist. But Ramon is firmly on it, and the club are now tracking him closely.
Any move would be complicated by Real Madrid’s position. Los Blancos still control 50% of Ramon’s rights and hold a buy-back clause, a structure that gives them a powerful say in his future. For Chelsea, that means negotiations would not be straightforward and any deal would likely require Madrid’s approval or involvement.
Blueprint emerging under Alonso
Strip away the noise and a clear pattern appears.
Chelsea are targeting young, tactically adaptable defenders with high ceilings, many of them already exposed to demanding tactical environments in Italy. Palestra fits that mould perfectly. Ramon does too.
Alonso, renowned at Leverkusen for trusting and accelerating young talent, is already influencing the profile of signings before he has even taken charge of a competitive match. He has personally helped deliver one major target and pushed the club deeper into a market he clearly respects.
Inter have been beaten to Palestra. Como have been warned that Ramon is now on a Premier League radar. Real Madrid, holding their 50% stake and buy-back option, will be watching as well.
Chelsea’s back line is being reshaped in real time. The only real question now is how far they are prepared to go, and how quickly, to turn interest in Italy’s next wave into a full defensive overhaul.
