World Cup 2026 Knockout Round: Teams That Have Secured Advancement
Teams Advancing to the Round of 32 in the 2026 World Cup
The 2026 World Cup has moved into its second week, with some nations playing their second group stage matches. Several teams have already earned their places in the knockout rounds.
This tournament features an expanded field of 48 teams, so the knockout phase starts with a Round of 32 instead of the usual Round of 16. Not only do the top two teams from each group move forward, but also the eight best third-place finishers advance. Tracking the third-place standings is useful for seeing which teams remain alive despite their current rankings.
Mexico Clinches First Spot in the Round of 32
Mexico was the earliest team to secure advancement after a 1-0 victory over South Korea on Thursday night. Their strong start included a 2-0 win against South Africa. A 1-1 draw between South Africa and Czechia earlier that day made it clear that the winner of Mexico versus South Korea would top Group A.
The match was goalless at halftime until Luis Romo capitalized on a mistake by South Korea’s goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, who collided with a teammate and lost possession inside the box, allowing Romo to score.
Raúl Rangel emerged as the hero for Mexico in goal, pulling off two crucial saves late in the game to preserve the clean sheet and secure the win.
El Tri not only won Group A but will also face a third-place finisher from Groups C, E, F, H, or I in the Round of 32. Their next match will be hosted in Mexico City, keeping them on home turf.
