Manchester United Target Khephren Thuram for Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick is only just getting started, and the next move could be a powerful raid on Serie A.
Ederson has already arrived from Atalanta in a deal worth more than £40million, a statement signing to inject bite and drive into the centre of the pitch. But with Casemiro gone and Champions League nights returning, one new face was never going to be enough. United know it. Carrick knows it. The market knows it.
Now Khephren Thuram has stepped into the frame.
Thuram on the radar – and Juventus under pressure
The Juventus midfielder has emerged as a serious option, with United exploring a deal at a moment when the Italian club are vulnerable. After missing out on Champions League qualification, Juve must raise around £10–11million by the end of the month to stay within financial rules. That need to sell has alerted Europe’s bigger hitters.
Juve paid roughly €20million for Thuram, but their stance has hardened into a clear asking price: between £35–40million. That figure is slightly lower than earlier whispers but still represents a healthy profit and a test of how much United really want him.
According to Corriere dello Sport, relayed by Man Utd news, United are weighing up whether to meet that valuation. Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia are already prepared to do so, yet money is not the only factor here. Thuram is understood to favour staying in Europe and, more specifically, sees the Premier League as his ideal destination. He has already rejected Galatasaray this summer, a small but telling sign of where he believes his future lies.
If United move decisively, they will not be negotiating from a position of weakness.
What Thuram would bring to Old Trafford
Thuram is built for Premier League tempo. A true box-to-box midfielder, he covers ground relentlessly, drives through lines, and relishes the physical duels that often decide big games in England. He doesn’t hide, doesn’t cruise through matches, and rarely shies away from contact.
His blend of athleticism and presence has not gone unnoticed in Italy. Maurizio Sarri’s long-time assistant Giovanni Martusciello offered a glowing assessment last year, saying: “Who do I like? Thuram, I think he’s extraordinary. Overall, they seem like a team that can have its say until the end. Then, to fight for the big goals, at least the ones they’ve always had in Turin, we need more time.”
At 25, Thuram sits in that sweet spot between experience and upside. Old enough to have weathered pressure at a major club, young enough to grow into a long-term pillar of a new-look midfield.
For United, the profile makes sense. Ederson brings aggression and control, but Carrick still needs another engine, someone who can surge from deep, support attacks, and then snap back into shape without the ball. A player who can help turn a solid Premier League third-place finish into something more ambitious: a sustained title conversation and a credible Champions League run.
A summer that will define Carrick’s project
United’s hierarchy accept that last season’s progress must be backed by serious investment. The Ederson deal was the first major outlay. It will not be the last. With Champions League football secured and expectations rising, this window feels less like a tidy refresh and more like a defining phase of Carrick’s tenure.
Thuram, currently free to discuss his future after missing out on France’s latest World Cup squad, represents opportunity at the right time and the right price bracket. Juventus need money. The player wants the Premier League. United need legs, power and personality in midfield.
All that remains is the question that shapes every big club’s summer: do they push the button now, or risk watching a perfect fit slip into someone else’s engine room?
