Real Madrid Sign Ibrahima Konate on Free Transfer

Real Madrid have moved decisively in the market again, striking a deal to sign Ibrahima Konate on a four-year contract after the France international failed to agree new terms with Liverpool.

The 27-year-old centre-back will join the European champions on a free transfer at the end of June, closing the book on his Anfield career after three seasons and 183 appearances in all competitions.

Madrid confirmed they have reached an agreement with Konate “for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until 30 June, 2030”, adding another powerful defensive option to a squad already stacked with elite talent.

For Liverpool, this is a parting that had been looming for months. Negotiations over an extension broke down over what was described as a clear gap between the club and the player regarding his value and wages. In the end, one of the Premier League’s most physically dominant defenders walks away for nothing.

Konate arrived on Merseyside in 2021 from RB Leipzig for £35m, a signing viewed at the time as both a statement and a long-term investment. Across three campaigns he collected major honours: the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two League Cups, while forming a formidable partnership at times in the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

Yet his final appearance in front of the Kop slipped by without the fanfare such a figure usually receives. Liverpool’s last Premier League game of the season, against Brentford on 24 May, came and went without a farewell.

Konate later admitted he had been “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye” to the supporters that had embraced him. “At that moment, I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you,” he said, a line that now reads like a quiet epilogue to his Anfield spell.

Now the stage changes completely. From the Premier League to the Bernabéu, from Anfield’s red to Madrid’s white, Konate heads into the next chapter of his career while on duty with France at the 2026 World Cup, swapping one giant of the European game for another and stepping straight into the glare of Spanish football’s most demanding arena.
