2026 World Cup Group Stage: Paths to the Round of 32 and What Teams Need

2026 World Cup Group Stage Update: Who Advances and Who Faces Elimination

As the second round of group matches unfolds in the 2026 World Cup, some teams are securing their spots in the knockout rounds while others risk an early exit. This tournament’s expanded format opens many possibilities going into the final group games.

Previously, 32 teams competed with the top two from each group advancing. Now, with 48 teams, the 12 group winners and runners-up will be joined by the eight best third-place teams to form a Round of 32. Sixteen teams will be eliminated after the group phase, creating intricate qualification scenarios especially for those finishing third.

The following analysis covers each group’s current standings and outlines what each team requires to either advance or avoid elimination.

Group A

Mexico has already sealed the group lead after defeating South Korea. South Korea can qualify in second place with at least a draw against South Africa. South Africa still has a chance to progress if they beat Mexico and Czechia upsets South Korea. Czechia remains alive with a win over South Korea combined with South Africa failing to beat Mexico.

Group B

Canada and Switzerland share the top spot with four points each. They face off next with first place at stake. Canada controls its fate; a win or draw secures first place thanks to superior goal difference. Switzerland must win to claim the top position. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar need unlikely breaks and strong goal differences to advance as second or among the best third-placed teams but still have a chance to make it through based on their upcoming head-to-head match.

Group C

Scotland can lock in a knockout spot by beating Morocco. If Scotland wins and Brazil fails to overcome Haiti, Scotland would clinch the group’s top spot. Haiti faces elimination if Brazil beats them and Morocco defeats Scotland. Neither Morocco nor Brazil are safe yet after their opening draw.

Group D

United States will top the group if they beat Australia and Turkey does not defeat Paraguay. Australia can claim first place by beating the US and if Paraguay fails to overcome Turkey. Paraguay will be out if they lose to Turkey and Australia avoids defeat. Turkey faces elimination if they lose to Paraguay and the US avoids losing to Australia.

Group E

Germany can secure the group lead with a win over Ivory Coast if Ecuador fails to beat Curacao. Conversely, Ivory Coast will top the group by beating Germany and if Curacao does not upset Ecuador. Ecuador will be eliminated if they lose to Curacao and Germany avoids defeat. Curacao faces exit if they lose and Ivory Coast avoids loss.

Group F

Sweden advances with a win over the Netherlands and claims the group lead if Japan fails to beat Tunisia. Tunisia will be out with a loss to Japan and a Netherlands win. The Netherlands and Japan remain in contention after drawing their opener.

Group G

All matches ended in draws here. No team can qualify or be eliminated after the second matchday. Any side gaining four points from the next two games will secure a top-two finish.

Group H

All initial matches ended in draws here as well. No team is confirmed qualified or eliminated heading into the next round. Achieving four points in the upcoming two games guarantees a spot in the top two.

Group I

Both winners, Norway and France, face the defeated Senegal and Iraq next. No definitive qualification or elimination decisions will come from these matches.

Group J

Argentina will lead the group if they defeat Austria and Jordan does not beat Algeria. Austria can top the group by beating Argentina and if Algeria fails to win. Both Jordan and Algeria risk elimination with losses combined with the other favorites winning.

Group K

Colombia will top the group with a win over DR Congo. Neither DR Congo nor Portugal can confirm advancement or elimination after their draw. Uzbekistan will be knocked out if they lose to Portugal and Colombia beats DR Congo.

Group L

England will lead if they beat Ghana and Croatia wins over Panama. Ghana can top the group with a victory against England and if Panama beats Croatia. Both Panama and Croatia face elimination with losses combined with the other teams winning.
