Understanding the World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage: Seeds and Format Explained

The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the largest tournament yet. With 48 teams competing, the knockout phase now includes 32 teams instead of the usual 16. This new structure alters the bracket layout, the progression to the final, and how matchups are decided.

Which Teams Make It to the Knockouts?

Thirty-two teams advance past the group stage: the top two from each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-place finishers. That means 16 teams will be eliminated after the group matches.

As of June 23, six teams have secured their spot in the Round of 32:

  • Mexico (Group A) – topped their group first
  • United States (Group D) – beat Australia to qualify
  • Germany (Group E) – returning after early exits in 2018 and 2022
  • France (Group I) – 2018 champions progressing smoothly
  • Argentina (Group J) – current champions led by Lionel Messi
  • Norway (Group I) – back in the World Cup after 28 years

The remaining teams will be decided by the end of the group stage on June 27, including the competition for the eight best third-place spots.

How Is the Knockout Bracket Set?

The bracket is predetermined before the tournament starts. Teams' positions in their groups dictate their place in the knockout stage, following a fixed path laid out by FIFA.

The draw happened in December 2025. The 48 teams were split into four pots of 12 based on FIFA rankings, with hosts Mexico, Canada, and the United States seeded and placed atop their groups. Pot 1 contained the highest-ranked teams, ensuring strong teams stayed apart in the groups.

The knockout bracket then follows a preset pattern. Group winners, runners-up, and the eight qualifying third-placed teams each occupy specific spots in the Round of 32. Winners get a theoretically easier route compared to runners-up. The eight third-placed teams face group winners according to a table FIFA published beforehand. No redraw or reseeding happens after the group stage; results determine everything.

Knockout Phase Format

The knockout rounds are single-elimination. Win and move forward; lose and you're out. If a match is tied after 90 minutes, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, a penalty shootout decides the winner.

The tournament progresses through five knockout rounds:

  • Round of 32: 32 teams compete in 16 matches, 16 advance
  • Round of 16: 16 teams, 8 matches
  • Quarter-finals: 8 teams, 4 matches
  • Semi-finals: 4 teams, 2 matches
  • Final and third-place playoff: the last two semi-final winners meet in the final, while the losers play for third place

There will be 32 knockout games within the full 104-match schedule, which is 40 more than the 2022 World Cup.

Schedule for the Knockout Matches

The final is set for Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM ET. This event will be part of a tournament held across 16 stadiums in three countries. For the first time ever, the final will feature a live halftime show.
