Updated List of Nations Eliminated from FIFA World Cup 2026
The 2026 World Cup has already seen some teams exit earlier than they hoped. With the tournament expanding from 32 to 48 teams, more nations get a chance to advance past the group stage, but elimination still hits hard for those who don’t make it.
This expansion adds an extra knockout round, meaning 32 teams move forward instead of 16, including the top two from each group plus the eight best third-place finishers. Because of this, very few teams are confirmed out before all group matches finish.
Confirmed Eliminations So Far
Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Panama, Qatar, Czechia, and Curacao are among the first to exit the competition. The early knockouts partly relate to new tie-breaker rules in the group stage that rank teams based on head-to-head results if points are tied.
For example, Haiti lost their opener 1-0 to Scotland and then 3-0 to Brazil, so even if they earn three points later, they cannot surpass Brazil or Morocco in their group. Their head-to-head loss to Scotland means Scotland will place higher if tied on points.
Understanding Group Stage Tie-Breakers
FIFA clarified the tie-break criteria ahead of the tournament:
- Head-to-head results between tied teams
- Goal difference in those head-to-head matches
- Goals scored in those head-to-head games
- If still tied, overall goal difference in group matches
- Overall goals scored in group matches
- Team conduct score based on yellow/red cards
- If needed, FIFA ranking position
Advancing as a Third-Place Team
One new wrinkle for 2026 is that eight of the 12 third-place teams will also move on to the Round of 32. They will be ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, conduct score, and FIFA ranking to decide which third-place sides qualify.
Expanded Tournament Format
Since 1998, the World Cup featured 32 teams. This year, the field increased to 48, adding four groups in the opening phase and an additional knockout round. The champion will play eight matches in total.
We think this format gives more nations a shot at progressing but some big names could still stumble early. The drama of the group stage remains intense, especially with the new rules in play.
