William Saliba Faces Long Recovery After Back Surgery

William Saliba’s season has been ripped apart in one brutal diagnosis.

The Arsenal defender, one of the pillars of both Mikel Arteta’s back line and the French national team, is set to undergo back surgery that will rule him out for four to five months, according to reports from L'Équipe and The Athletic.

The warning signs had been there. Saliba was forced off in the semi-final against Spain with back problems, a substitution that initially looked like precaution but is now revealed as the start of something far more serious. French journalist Julien Laurens reported that, during the injury episode, Saliba admitted his back was “completely done for” and that he had already been playing through the pain with the help of strong painkillers.

This is not a minor setback. A four- to five-month lay-off at this stage means Arsenal are unlikely to see him in competitive action again before 2027. For a player so central to their structure, both in and out of possession, that is a seismic blow.

For France, it is the loss of a defender at the peak of his powers. For Arsenal, it is the sudden removal of the calm at the heart of their defence.

Now they must find a way to live without him, for a long stretch, in a season that was built around his presence.
