Tottenham Secures £85m Mateus Fernandes Deal as Midfield Market Shifts

Tottenham have planted a flag in this summer’s transfer window, winning the race for Mateus Fernandes in a deal worth a guaranteed £85m with West Ham.

No add-ons. No performance clauses. Just a straight, heavyweight fee for a 21-year-old Portugal midfielder who has become the latest statement signing in north London.

Spurs get their man

Spurs had made Fernandes a priority target after seeing an £80m move for Sandro Tonali knocked back by Newcastle. Rather than haggle or hesitate, they pushed harder for the next name on their list.

The move turned into a head-to-head with Manchester United. Spurs went all in. United stepped away.

Tottenham’s willingness to commit to the full £85m figure proved decisive, with the club determined not to miss out on a player they view as central to their long-term midfield rebuild.

Fernandes, represented by Jorge Mendes, kept his options open while his camp spoke to both clubs. In the end, only one side was prepared to meet West Ham’s demands outright.

United hold the line – again

At Old Trafford, the response was different. United admired Fernandes, but refused to abandon their valuation principles.

They believed last season vindicated that stance: hold firm, wait for the right deal, trust that patience brings the right players at the right price. This time, that approach cost them a target.

There were also doubts inside United over whether Fernandes truly wanted to play for the club, a concern that only strengthened their resolve not to be dragged into a bidding war.

Instead, their midfield rebuild follows a different route.

United have already agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson. His arrival, though, has been pushed back after a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad, leaving a key piece of their summer plan temporarily out of reach.

Midfield plans on hold at Old Trafford

United’s players report back for pre-season on 9 July. As things stand, Michael Carrick’s squad looks almost identical to the one that finished last season.

Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia have departed at the end of their contracts, but there have been no major sales, no marquee arrivals through the door, and now no Fernandes.

The situation is complicated further by Manuel Ugarte’s serious injury on World Cup duty with Uruguay. United had been planning to sell the midfielder; that strategy is now shelved, at least in the short term, as he begins the long road back to fitness.

Up front, Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee remains at the club despite speculation over his future. Inside the camp, talk of Mason Mount leaving has been firmly dismissed, with sources playing down any suggestion of an imminent exit.

A window that could define two clubs

So Tottenham emerge from this battle with a new midfield centrepiece and a clear show of ambition. United walk away with their principles intact but another reminder that the market rarely waits.

One club has paid full price to accelerate its project. The other is gambling that restraint will again pay off when the right opportunity appears.

By the end of this window, it will be clear which strategy truly belongs at the top of the Premier League.
