Media reports have linked Neymar with a move to Major League Soccer, with talks said to have taken place with FC Cincinnati. Those negotiations, according to the reports, ultimately fell through, but the direction of travel is clear.

MLS has become a late-career haven for stars of his generation. Lionel Messi is at Inter Miami. Antoine Griezmann has joined Orlando City. Thomas Mueller is with Vancouver Whitecaps. The league offers a softer landing, a huge commercial platform, and a less punishing spotlight.

For Neymar, it could offer something else too: a chance to enjoy the game again, away from the crushing expectations that have followed him since he first stepped out for Santos as a teenager.

For now, though, he is back where it all started, in the white shirt of Santos, with a fanbase that knows every step of his journey and a club waiting to see whether its greatest modern idol is a short-term guest or the centerpiece of one last act.
