Celtic Pursues Radek Vitek as New No.1 Goalkeeper

Celtic’s search for a new No.1 has taken a sharp, promising turn. Radek Vitek has stopped hinting and started talking plainly: he is ready to walk away from Manchester United.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper, on United’s books since 2020 and tied down until 2028, has reached the point where training-ground potential is no longer enough. He wants a net to guard, every week, somewhere else.

And Celtic are circling.

The Scottish champions are light in the most unforgiving position on the pitch. Martin O’Neill did not bother to dress it up when he spoke last week.

“We need another goalkeeper,” he said, pointing to the current depth chart of Ross Doohan and Viljami Sinisalo. Two young options, two decent prospects, but not the level of competition a club with Celtic’s ambitions can afford to gamble on for a full season.

O’Neill praised Sinisalo’s efforts “under really trying circumstances” after stepping in to replace “the big fellow” last season, but quickly shifted the focus. That was then. A new season demands a new standard.

Pressed on whether he wanted another Kasper Schmeichel or Joe Hart type – a commanding, proven presence – O’Neill’s answer revealed the blueprint. Experience is welcome, complacency is not.

He does not want an older keeper happy to sit as a permanent understudy. He wants someone who arrives to threaten, to challenge, to make every training session feel like a trial. And if that profile comes in a younger package, he is open to that too.

That is where Vitek fits the frame.

Vitek pushes for the next step

Vitek has done his time on the loan circuit. Accrington Stanley, FC Blau-Weiss Linz, Bristol City – three very different stops in a career that has yet to touch the Old Trafford first team.

He has not played a single senior game for Manchester United, yet he has already built a reputation elsewhere. The 2025/26 campaign at Bristol City was the breakthrough. Vitek did not just impress; he swept the board. Player of the Year. Players’ Player of the Year. Young Player of the Year. Three trophies, one message: he carried weight in that dressing room and on that pitch.

The next logical step was supposed to be clear. According to BBC Sport, the plan had been for Vitek to sort his future before United’s pre-season started. A new club, a settled summer, a clean run into August.

It has not worked out that way. He was still in United colours at the weekend, part of the side beaten 1-0 by Wrexham in Helsinki. For a goalkeeper who has already stated his ambitions, that kind of limbo is not sustainable.

Vitek spelt it out to BBC Sport.

“I’m ready to go somewhere again and hopefully be number one,” he said. Loan or permanent? He is not fussy.

“I’m ready for both, to be fair. It depends on what the club wants and also on the options. There has been a few interests on the table. We’re hoping to choose the best one and hopefully it will happen soon.”

His stance has not shifted since he first set out his aims last season. He wants to play every week. That is the non-negotiable.

Celtic move into position

Celtic have been tracking that ambition closely. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reported on July 11 that the Glasgow club are interested in Vitek after his standout season at Bristol City, a line that matched neatly with O’Neill’s public admission that he needs another goalkeeper.

The timing is telling. O’Neill talks about wanting a hungry, threatening presence in goal. Vitek announces he is ready to leave United, on any terms that get him minutes. Celtic need a starter who can grow with the club. Vitek needs a stage big enough to match his own expectations.

For Celtic, the attraction is obvious. A 22-year-old with a major loan success behind him, under contract at one of Europe’s biggest clubs, yet still attainable because his path in Manchester is blocked. A keeper with the confidence to demand a No.1 role, not just a squad number.

For Vitek, the equation is just as clear. Celtic offer titles to chase, European nights, and a platform where a goalkeeper is constantly under the spotlight. Excel there, and the game opens up in a different way.

The decision now lies with Manchester United and with the offers on the table. Vitek has made his move. Celtic have made their interest known.

The question is whether the next time he walks out to the roar of a big crowd, he is wearing green and white and jogging towards the Celtic Park penalty area, finally as the undisputed first choice he has been pushing to become.
