Liverpool Targeting Yan Diomande: A Clash with PSG

Liverpool are not just in the race for Yan Diomande – they’re trying to run PSG off the road.

The Premier League club have zeroed in on the RB Leipzig and Ivory Coast winger as their chosen heir to Mohamed Salah, and they are behaving like a club determined not to let this one slip. At 19, Diomande is already being spoken about as one of the most dangerous one-v-one wide players in the game. Anyone who watched Ivory Coast’s World Cup opener against Ecuador will understand why.

Up against Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie in that first half, Diomande didn’t just beat his man. He dismantled him. Pace, balance, change of direction – it was the sort of performance that makes recruitment departments sit up and rip up their old plans.

Leipzig know exactly what they have. They don’t want to sell and have placed a valuation in the region of €130m (£112m). Yet, as David Ornstein has reported, Liverpool have already opened club-to-club talks, a clear signal that they are prepared to test that resolve.

PSG, inevitably, are in the frame. The French champions rarely sit out a battle for the most coveted young attackers in Europe, and Diomande fits every modern profile they like to chase. But this time, they are not dictating the pace.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are putting what he called “important money” on the table, and not just in terms of a transfer fee. On his YouTube channel, Romano outlined that the Merseyside club are ready to outbid PSG on the player’s contract as well, offering Diomande a more lucrative package to bring him to Anfield.

That’s the first major advantage.

The second lies in Paris, and it has nothing to do with Diomande himself. PSG’s squad structure is working against them. There is currently no clear slot for the teenager unless Bradley Barcola is sold, and there is no great urgency at the club to push Barcola out.

PSG are waiting. They need what Romano described as the “right proposal” for Barcola before they can fully commit to a move for Diomande. The size and nature of those bids will dictate how hard they go for Leipzig’s winger. If a suitable offer lands for Barcola, the path to Diomande becomes smoother. If not, the deal is complicated before it even starts.

Crucially, PSG are not desperate to sell. They can keep Barcola and carry on with him, which means they can also afford to be more cautious in their pursuit of Diomande. That hesitancy is exactly where Liverpool are trying to strike.

Behind the scenes, Liverpool are pushing. They know PSG remain very keen on Diomande, but they also know the French side are currently offering less, both in terms of contract and, at this stage, overall commitment. The Premier League club sense an opening and are leaning into it, armed with money, a clear role in the team, and the pull of Andoni Iraola’s project.

Diomande, according to reports earlier on Tuesday, is leaning their way too, with the winger understood to favour a move to Liverpool and the chance to work under Iraola.

The battle is on. One club is juggling pieces to make room; the other is clearing the runway and throwing down cash. For a 19-year-old winger already shredding full-backs on the world stage, the choice – and the statement it makes – could shape the next decade of his career.
