Erling Haaland Shines in Norway’s World Cup Debut
Erling Haaland's Impactful World Cup Introduction
Erling Haaland, one of the top strikers worldwide, made his first appearance at the World Cup during Norway’s match against Iraq. The Manchester City forward wasted no time proving his worth on soccer’s biggest stage.
Norway secured a 4–1 victory over Iraq, with Haaland scoring twice, sparking the country’s first World Cup win in 28 years. Before this tournament, Haaland had scored 351 senior goals across clubs and international matches but never played in a major senior international competition.
“To qualify for the World Cup is a really special thing,” Haaland said before the event. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be amazing. Finally.”
At just 25 years old, six years after his remarkable nine-goal performance in the 2019 U-20 World Cup, Haaland stepped onto the global stage with confidence.
A Strong Start Against Iraq
The intensity was clear from the beginning. Within six minutes, Haaland dominated Iraq’s defense, winning an aerial duel and sprinting towards goal. His initial pass to Alexander Sørloth was stopped by the goalkeeper, but he soon found success. A precise cross from David Møller Wolfe allowed Haaland to score Norway’s opening goal in the 29th minute.
Haaland then assisted Sørloth inside the penalty area but the chance was lost due to an extra touch. Iraq managed to equalize at 39 minutes, yet Haaland responded quickly. Pressuring the Iraqi goalkeeper, he seized a loose ball and scored again, securing a brace in his first World Cup half.
His defensive effort added to his impressive first-half showing, which included two goals from four shots.
Less Influence in the Second Half
After halftime, Haaland’s impact lessened as Iraq gained momentum and Norway struggled to keep possession. He dropped deeper to support teammates but was less effective, misplacing some passes.
Norway extended their lead through Leo Østigård’s header. Haaland had a chance to complete a hat-trick late in the game but his shot was saved by the Iraqi keeper. Still, his highlight came in stoppage time when he leapt high to head the ball back into the box, leading to Norway’s fourth goal, credited as an own goal by Ayman Hussein.
Two goals and a near assist helped Norway top Group I and earned Haaland praise for living up to expectations.
Stats That Tell the Story
No player took more shots than Haaland’s five, and his six touches inside the opponent’s box led all players on the field. Now, he has scored in his Bundesliga, Premier League, Champions League, and World Cup debuts.
