Liverpool's Alisson Stays Amid Squad Overhaul

Liverpool’s summer rebuild has its first hard red line: Alisson Becker is going nowhere.

In a window already defined by upheaval and emotional goodbyes, the club have moved decisively to shut down Juventus’ hopes of prising away their goalkeeper and dressing-room pillar. One experienced leader too many, they’ve decided, is already walking out of the door.

Konaté gone, Salah and Robertson next – and the line in the sand

The churn is brutal. For the second straight summer, Liverpool’s squad is being ripped up and reassembled.

Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah are both leaving on free transfers. Robertson will join Tottenham, who have already secured Marcos Senesi and are weighing up a record-breaking move for a Manchester City player. Salah, the face of Liverpool’s attack for years, will also depart, taking with him a mountain of goals and aura.

Behind them, the uncertainty runs deep. The futures of Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo are under scrutiny. Even Alisson’s name has been in the rumour mill.

Then came the confirmation that Ibrahima Konaté is leaving too. Club and player failed to find common ground on a new deal, and the 27-year-old will move on after talks stretching back to November 2023.

Journalist Ben Jacobs described it on X as “a disappointing outcome, and one Liverpool tried to avert.” There was, he reported, “a significant gulf” between the two sides over terms. Liverpool were ready to pay serious money, but refused to rip up their wage structure for one renewal.

They chose discipline over sentiment. Rather than sink a huge package into Konaté’s contract, the club will divert those resources into replacing Salah and shoring up other key areas of the squad.

There is faith in the future. Internally, Liverpool have “high hopes” for young defenders Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni heading into next season. But raw potential doesn’t replace experience overnight, and the sheer volume of departures has forced a rethink.

Alisson told: you’re staying

That rethink centres on Alisson.

With Robertson, Salah and now Konaté all heading for the exit, Liverpool have formally told their iconic goalkeeper he will not be allowed to join Juventus this summer.

Fabrizio Romano reported on X that Liverpool have made their stance clear: they want Alisson to stay and continue at the club next season. The plan, set last week, has been reaffirmed – they do not intend to lose another senior cornerstone of the dressing room.

Alisson and Juventus had already shaken hands on personal terms back in April. The Italian giants put a three-year contract on the table, a tempting offer for a 31-year-old with just 12 months left on his Liverpool deal.

The move made sense on paper. New challenge, long contract, a giant of European football calling.

But this is not a cold, transactional relationship. The bond between Alisson and Liverpool remains strong, and neither side wanted to turn a negotiation into a battle. The Brazilian was never going to force his way out if Liverpool dug in.

They have. The decision has been made at Anfield: he stays. Alisson will see out the final year of his contract, anchoring a defence that’s losing one of its mainstays in Konaté and its left-back in Robertson.

In a summer of flux, Liverpool have chosen their constant.

Rebuilding the back line

Konaté’s departure now sets off a chain reaction in recruitment.

The Daily Mail report that PSG are currently viewed as his most likely destination, with Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid also hovering in various reports. Once he goes, Liverpool’s senior centre-back options narrow to Virgil van Dijk, Gomez, Jacquet and Leoni.

On paper, that’s four names. In reality, it’s two established figures and two prospects coming off long-term injuries. No manager or sporting director would look at that depth chart and feel comfortable going into a season that includes a title push, European commitments and domestic cups.

Sources have indicated that Liverpool intend to re-enter the market for a new centre-back. They want a fifth body in the heart of defence, someone who can absorb minutes immediately while Jacquet and Leoni develop at a more natural pace.

Early names are already circulating. Juventus defender Gleison Bremer has been linked, as has former Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah. Different profiles, different price points, but the message is the same: Liverpool will not leave Van Dijk and Gomez exposed.

The club are trying to walk a tightrope. They are betting big on a new attacking era without Salah, reshaping the wage bill without Konaté, and trusting youth at the back. But they also know the cost of stripping too much experience out of the squad in one go.

That’s why Alisson, still in his prime, still one of the best goalkeepers in the world, is non-negotiable.

Liverpool’s rebuild is rolling whether they like it or not. The question now is simple: with Alisson locked in and Konaté out, can they rebuild a defence worthy of the Brazilian standing behind it?
