Pedro Neto's World Stage: Ready for Portugal's Major Tournament

Pedro Neto has waited a long time for this. Too long, in his eyes.

At 25 caps, he is no newcomer to the Portugal shirt, yet this summer carries a different weight. For the first time, the winger will walk into a major global tournament as a central figure, one of several Blues preparing to step out under the brightest lights.

His message is simple: this is payback time.

The build-up has already offered a glimpse of his intent. In Portugal’s final warm-up game before the tournament, Neto cut inside and struck in a 2-1 win over Nigeria, his second goal for his country, a reminder of the direct running and sharp finishing that once marked him out as one of Europe’s most exciting young wide men. After injuries stalled that rise, the goal felt like a statement.

“It’s a lot of motivation for my part,” he says, reflecting on what lies ahead. The words are measured, but the drive behind them is not. He talks about responsibility, about the people he carries with him every time he pulls on the shirt.

“I want to be there to help the team and to try to win it for the fans and for the family and for all my friends that I know I represent when I go there.”

This isn’t just another call-up. For Neto, it is the realisation of a childhood obsession. He grew up glued to every major tournament Portugal contested, watching generations of stars chase glory on screens he could only dream of stepping through.

“I used to look to all the competitions Portugal were in and to be a part of one, it’s like a dream come true, to be honest.”

Now he is in the picture, not on the sofa.

A New Challenge, A New Stage

Portugal’s path begins in Group K, with a trio of opponents that demand focus rather than fanfare.

  • First up, DR Congo. The two sides meet at Houston Stadium on Wednesday 17 June, a 6pm (UK) kick-off that will set the tone for the campaign.
  • Then comes Uzbekistan at the same venue, another 6pm (UK) start on Tuesday 23 June.
  • Colombia complete the group schedule, a test of temperament as much as talent.

These are not fixtures that allow for easing into the tournament. They are games where one lapse can derail months of preparation. For a player like Neto, who thrives on rhythm and confidence, the stakes are obvious: start fast, stay ruthless.

He knows what is at play here. A strong group stage can turn a promising international career into a defining one. A flat one, and the questions return.

Neto, though, sounds like a man who has already made his choice. After years of watching Portugal’s big moments from afar, he finally stands where he always wanted to be — at the heart of it, with the ball at his feet and a world to chase down.
