John Barnes on Harry Kane’s Focus Amid Messi, Mbappe & Haaland in World Cup Golden Boot Race

Harry Kane thrives on scoring goals, but is he really tracking how Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland perform during the 2026 World Cup? John Barnes, a former England star, shared his thoughts in an exclusive interview with GOAL.

Star Strikers Launch Their Campaigns

The tournament kicked off with some of football's biggest names making early statements. Messi stunned by scoring a hat-trick against Algeria, becoming the oldest player to do so on the World Cup stage. Meanwhile, Mbappe and Haaland each netted two goals for France and Norway against Senegal and Iraq.

Kane was slightly later to open his account but made it count with two goals as England edged Croatia 4-2. This summer promises history, as these top forwards chase the rare feat of winning multiple Golden Boots at football's premier international event.

Does Kane Care About the Golden Boot Battle?

When asked if Kane keeps tabs on his rival goal scorers, Barnes said: "If it helps England advance, yes. But if chasing personal goals risks the team’s success, I don’t think Harry will get distracted by that. He focuses on what's best for England. Scoring is great, but if others outscore him, it won’t bother him."

He added that Kane’s priority lies with team success over individual awards, and he believes Mbappe and Haaland share that mindset. Barnes explained that players like Mbappe might score less if it means France wins, pointing to the depth in their squad. For Barnes, individual trophies mean little compared to winning as a team.

Can Kane Still Go Strong in 2030?

At 32, Kane remains in fine form, boasting a career-best 61 goals for Bayern Munich this season and contributing to their Bundesliga title. Does he have another World Cup cycle left?

Barnes hopes England will have new talent ready to take over by then. He said: "Let’s focus on this World Cup first. Thinking about a 36-year-old Kane in four years is tricky. We haven’t won since 1966, so let’s concentrate on the present."

Kane’s Legacy and Iconic World Cup Hairstyles

Kane aims to lift the World Cup trophy and inspire millions, with his famous jump-and-punch goal celebration already imitated worldwide. Though his hairstyle isn’t widely copied, World Cups often spark hair trends—from Carlos Valderrama’s afro to David Beckham’s mohawk and Ronaldo’s (R9) memorable ‘Cascao’ cut in 2002.

Barnes commented on these styles: "Valderrama’s look was natural, R9’s was a bit foolish, and Beckham has tried many styles. Haircuts don’t matter unless you’re a great player. If you are, you can pull off anything."

viagogo Brings Fans Closer to World Cup Culture

To celebrate FIFA World Cup 2026, viagogo, a leading ticket marketplace, launched "World Cuts," a unique barbershop event recreating iconic football hairstyles. Fans at Shoreditch’s Ruffians Barber Shop could transform into their favourite football heroes with legendary tournament-inspired looks.

Manchester United superfan Frank Ilett ended his long hair journey with three classic World Cup styles: Valderrama’s curls, Beckham’s mohawk, and Chris Waddle’s mullet.
