Atlético Madrid Accuses Barcelona of Smear Campaign Over Julián Álvarez
Atlético Madrid have gone on the offensive. Not on the pitch, but online.
Incensed by growing noise in Catalonia around a possible move for Julián Álvarez, the club publicly accused Barcelona of running a “smear campaign” and spreading “fake news” about their 26-year-old forward, who they insist is not for sale and is valued internally at up to £130m.
This is not the usual dry statement and move on. Atlético chose satire as their weapon.
Memes, Mockery and a Very Clear Message
With Barcelona fresh from sealing a £69m deal for Antony Gordon and being linked with another major outlay on Álvarez, social media began to fill with talk of an imminent Barça bid. Atlético’s response was to hijack the conversation.
Their official accounts pushed out a series of parody graphics showing Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha in Atlético shirts, complete with joke transfer offers. For Yamal, the “bid” included Bad Bunny concert tickets, an annual subscription and a bag of sunflower seeds. It was pointed, petty and very deliberate.
Alongside an image of former Leeds winger Raphinha in red and white, Atlético added a sharp caption: “Don’t believe everything you see, especially if it’s related to Barca.”
The message was unmistakable: if you think the Álvarez stories are real, you’ll believe anything.
From Jokes to Accusations
The tone then hardened.
In another post, Atlético dragged Barcelona’s sporting director Deco into the theatre, flatly denying that they had made any attempt to lure him into their scouting structure in Brazil.
“Finally, we want to take this opportunity to categorically deny that we have made an offer to the sporting director of FC Barcelona to join our scouting team in the Brazilian market,” the club wrote, before twisting the knife.
“No, Atlético de Madrid would never do something like that. However, in recent months, we’ve been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players.
“Leaked information with ulterior motives, ‘fake news,’ constant disrespect, the culé version of the propaganda machine inventing little stories, calls before direct matchups.”
That is as direct as it gets between two major Spanish clubs away from the dugout. No coded language. No diplomatic softening. Atlético are accusing Barcelona, and the Barcelona ecosystem, of deliberately destabilising Álvarez and their dressing room with carefully timed leaks and stories.
Barcelona, when contacted, declined to comment. The Spanish FA has also been approached for a view on the escalating rhetoric.
A Fight Over a Forward in His Prime
Álvarez is at the centre of the storm. The Argentine has delivered 20 goals in 49 games in all competitions this season, a return that explains why Atlético place such a steep price tag on him and why his name lights up transfer gossip columns the moment a big club appears to be in the market.
With the summer window set to open on June 15 and close on September 1, the timing of this public clash is no coincidence. This is the period when agents talk, intermediaries brief, and clubs try to shape the narrative before bids even land.
Atlético have chosen not just to shut the door, but to slam it loudly in Barcelona’s face, with the world watching. Whether that ends the story, or simply raises the stakes ahead of a long, hot window, is another battle entirely.
