United States Dominates Australia in Group D Match
The United States walked off at halftime in total command, 2–0 up on Australia in this Group D meeting at Lumen Field, and the scoreline told only part of the story.
For ten minutes, it looked like a proper World Cup arm wrestle. Australia pressed high, the duels were sharp, and both midfields snapped into tackles without giving an inch. Then the American tempo went up a gear. And the game tilted.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute, born from sheer pressure. Folarin Balogun drove dangerously into the box, forcing panic in the Australian back line. Cameron Burgess, backtracking and off balance, turned the ball into his own net. It was scruffy, it was unfortunate for Australia, but it was exactly what the United States had earned with their aggressive start.
From there, the pattern was set.
The Americans hunted in packs, their movement pulling Australia out of shape. Weston McKennie dictated the rhythm, snapping into second balls and spraying play wide, where the U.S. did their real damage. Without injured talisman Christian Pulisic, this could have felt like a diminished attack. Instead, the wide players and full-backs drove the game, stretching the pitch and asking constant questions of the Australian defense.
Australia tried to respond on the counter. A few breaks hinted at danger, but they rarely developed into clean chances. Each time they crossed halfway, the U.S. midfield recovered, reset, and squeezed the space. The Socceroos found themselves chasing shadows, the pace and intensity from the Americans simply too much.
The pressure finally told again just before the interval.
Sergino Dest sparked the move, stepping forward with intent and combining neatly before the ball broke for Alex Freeman. His finish found the net, though not without a moment of confusion. Contact with an Australian defender left players glancing at the referee, waiting for a whistle. VAR stepped in, took a long look, and confirmed the goal. Once the decision came, the noise inside Lumen Field surged, American players celebrating a cushion they fully deserved.
By halftime, the United States looked like a side in control of its destiny in this group. Two goals up, dominant in the duels, and brimming with confidence despite Pulisic’s absence, they had Australia penned back and struggling to breathe.
The second half will tell whether this becomes a statement rout or a professional job seen out, but one thing is already clear: Team USA has planted a firm flag in Group D.
