Tottenham Break Transfer Record for Defender Alice Sombath

Tottenham have underlined their ambition in the women’s game by breaking their transfer record to sign France international defender Alice Sombath from Lyon.

The 22-year-old arrives for an undisclosed fee, but it eclipses the sum Spurs paid for Norway midfielder Signe Gaupset – believed to be around £375,000 – last year. Contract details remain under wraps, yet the size of the investment and the calibre of the player say enough.

Sombath comes from the very top of the European game. Five seasons at Lyon, 102 appearances, five straight league titles and a place in the 2021-22 Women’s Champions League-winning squad form a serious résumé. She has climbed every rung of the French national setup, from under-16 level to the senior team, and played in all of France’s matches at Euro 2025, starting three group games.

Now she swaps a serial-winning environment for a club trying to crash that party in England.

“I want to do my best here at Tottenham. I think the league is very competitive, every game is tough and that's what I'm most excited about,” Sombath said, pointing directly at the weekly intensity of the WSL as a key draw. She has watched Spurs’ rise from afar. “I saw that Spurs had a very good season last year. My qualities can bring something to the team, even though I know they already have a lot.”

Her qualities are clear enough. Developed at Paris FC’s academy, then sharpened in Paris St-Germain’s youth system before that 2020 move to Lyon, Sombath brings a distinctly modern defensive profile. She can operate at centre-back or right-back, aggressive without the ball, composed with it, and comfortable stepping into midfield zones to start attacks.

Tottenham manager Martin Ho has been tracking that profile for a while.

“She’s a player we’ve followed closely for some time and one who fits the profile of what we’re building here,” he said. “She has already shown real maturity in her performances, and we believe she has all the qualities to continue developing into a top player within our environment.

“Alice is an aggressive defender who is comfortable in possession, competitive in her duels, and has the ambition to keep improving every day. This is another important addition as we continue building for the future. We can't wait to get started with Alice and welcome her into the group.”

The message is unmistakable: this is not a vanity signing, it’s a structural one.

Tottenham’s window backs that up. Sombath is one of six key recruits, joining Shekeira Martinez, Kirsty Hanson, Victoria Pelova, Caitlin Dijkstra and Selma Panengstuen in a squad that has been reshaped early and decisively. Business done with weeks to spare, rather than a late scramble.

Spurs enjoyed a strong campaign last season; Sombath has been brought in to help turn strong into sustained and credible. A defender forged in Lyon’s relentless standards now anchors a back line in North London.

If Tottenham’s intent needed a headline, breaking their transfer record for one of Europe’s most promising defenders just provided it.
