Mexico Secures First Spot in 2026 World Cup Round of 32
Mexico Advances to Knockout Stage with Win Over South Korea
Mexico continued their flawless run at the 2026 World Cup by becoming the first team to secure a place in the last 32. The hosts edged out South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara, clinching the top spot in Group A.
The winning goal came early in the second half. Midfielder Luis Romo capitalized on a goalkeeper error when Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball following a collision with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk. Romo tapped into an empty net in the 50th minute, giving Mexico the lead they would hold onto.
South Korea’s Close Calls
South Korea had their moments late in the match. In the 87th minute, Cho Gue-sung headed toward goal from close range, but Raul Rangel made a crucial save. Moments later, Yang Hyun-jun's follow-up shot was also stopped by the Mexican keeper.
Earlier, captain Son Heung-min chipped the ball over Rangel, but his effort was cleared off the line by Edson Alvarez, and replays showed Son was offside anyway.
The home crowd, initially frustrated enough to boo at halftime due to a quiet first half, roared back as Mexico nearly doubled their lead in the 75th minute. Raul Jimenez fired a shot from a tight angle that was saved. Substitute Obed Vargas also tested Kim with a powerful strike late on that required a diving save.
Looking Ahead
The victory confirmed Mexico’s perfect record so far and guaranteed their progression as Group A winners. This means they will play their round-of-32 and potentially round-of-16 matches in Mexico City. Should England win their group and first knockout game, Mexico could face them next.
Despite the loss, South Korea remain well placed to advance thanks to their earlier win against the Czech Republic. They will meet South Africa next Thursday in Monterrey, while Mexico faces the Czech Republic in their final group fixture in Mexico City at the same time.
