Chelsea Closing in on Marco Palestra Signing

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Italy international Marco Palestra, with the defender in London today to complete his medical ahead of a big-money move from Atalanta.

The right-back flew into the capital yesterday, and his camp spent the evening ironing out the final details of a long-term deal. Chelsea expect to have the paperwork signed today, tying Palestra to Stamford Bridge on a six-year contract with an option for a seventh.

Inter had pushed hard for the 26-year-old, but Chelsea simply outmuscled them. The Premier League club effectively doubled the salary on the table, blowing away the Nerazzurri’s offer of €2.5m per season by putting down €5m net per year to secure their man.

The fee reflects that intent. Figures around the deal are still being debated, with British transfer reporter Ben Jacobs describing the price as “in excess of €50m.” In Italy, Sky Sport Italia report a more precise structure: €57m guaranteed, plus a further €3m tied to achievable add-ons.

Atalanta, who continue to show a sharp eye for both talent and timing in the market, have also secured a 10 per cent cut of any future sale. For Chelsea, it is a heavy investment in a modern, attack-minded full-back. For Atalanta, it is another lucrative exit that may yet pay off again when Palestra moves on from west London.
