Marcus Rashford's Barcelona Future at Risk Due to Bernardo Silva

Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona dream is hanging by a thread – and it may not be Anthony Gordon or Julián Álvarez who cut it, but Bernardo Silva.

The Manchester United forward, on loan at Barça since the summer of 2025, has made it clear he wants to stay. The Catalan club like him too. Yet liking a player and paying €30million for him are two very different things, and that buy option now looks increasingly unlikely to be triggered.

Because Barcelona are moving in a different direction.

Bernardo Silva, the game-changer

In Spain, the conversation has largely centred on the imminent arrival of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for £69m. Another left-sided England international, another high-fee statement signing. Add serious talks with Atlético Madrid over a €150m deal for Julián Álvarez, and the assumption has been simple: Rashford is the odd man out.

But Sport in Barcelona point to a different name as the decisive factor – Bernardo Silva.

The Portuguese midfielder is leaving Manchester City at the end of the season and, crucially, he can walk into his next club as a free agent. According to the Catalan outlet, Silva wants Barça. His agent, Jorge Mendes, has already put his client’s name on the table at the Camp Nou.

Inside the club, the idea is being taken seriously. Very seriously.

Barcelona view Silva as a player still operating at an elite level, someone who has again been central to Pep Guardiola’s plans this season. They see leadership, personality, and that rare blend of technical quality and tactical intelligence that Guardiola has leaned on for years.

Just as important is his versatility. Barça believe he can slide into midfield or step out to the right wing, where he could ease the burden on teenage phenomenon Lamine Yamal. One signing, multiple roles, Champions League experience, no transfer fee.

The pressure on the squad’s attacking places tightens with every step of those talks.

No room for Rashford

Sport go further, spelling out the consequences. If Bernardo Silva arrives – on top of the already-confirmed signing of Gordon – Rashford’s chances of remaining in Catalonia collapse.

“With the arrival of the Portuguese player and the already confirmed signing of Anthony Gordon, there would be no room in the squad for the English winger,” the report states bluntly.

In other words, the domino that really matters for Rashford is not Gordon on the left or Álvarez through the middle. It is Silva, the free agent who can reshape Xavi’s options on the right and in midfield while squeezing the wage bill in another area.

Atlético Madrid are also in the frame for Silva, and Barcelona will be negotiating with them over Álvarez this summer. That triangle adds another layer of intrigue, but from Rashford’s perspective the message is stark: if Barça win the race for Bernardo, his loan spell at the Camp Nou is almost certainly a one-season fling.

Arsenal told to pounce

If Barcelona step away, the question becomes simple: who moves for Marcus Rashford?

In England, one high-profile Arsenal supporter has already made her pitch. TNT Sports presenter Laura Woods wants the Gunners to test Manchester United’s resolve.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Woods said: “I would love to see Rashford there! For that amount of money, what was it? £26m or something like that.

“I don’t understand the difference there [compared to Anthony Gordon] in price tag. Marcus Rashford at Barcelona seemed to really work.

“You’re right, I’d kind of like to see him back in the Premier League as well.”

Her argument is hard to ignore. If Barcelona refuse to activate a €30m clause, a player of Rashford’s pedigree could hit the market at a price that looks modest in an era where Gordon is changing clubs for nearly three times as much.

For Mikel Arteta, Rashford would offer pace, direct running, and proven Premier League experience across the front line. For United, the decision is more complex: cash in, or attempt to reintegrate a player who appears to have found new life in Spain.

For now, everything hangs on Barcelona’s next move. If Bernardo Silva walks through the door at the Camp Nou, Rashford may find his future not in Catalonia, but in the eye of a bidding war back in England – and Arsenal have already been told to be first in line.
