Rafael Leao Eyes Manchester United Move

Rafael Leao has nudged the door to Old Trafford a little wider – and he’s done it with his own words.

The AC Milan forward, one of Serie A’s most explosive attacking talents, has openly name‑checked Manchester United as a club he admires, sharpening focus on a transfer race that now feels like it’s heading towards a straight shootout.

Leao’s admiration for United

Speaking in a recent interview, relayed by Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà, the 26-year-old was asked which English sides he keeps an eye on. His answer will have pricked ears in Manchester.

“Of course, I watch the Premier League a lot. I like Manchester United, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my idol. But Arsenal is also a team I follow on TV.”

For a player so often linked with a Premier League move, that is not background noise. That is a clear signal. If Leao has a say in his next destination, United and Arsenal sit front and centre.

The reality, though, is more complex. His future will be dictated by who actually comes to the table – and how serious their offers are.

From €100m man to cut‑price opportunity

Since arriving at Milan from Lille in August 2019, Leao has grown into one of the league’s headline acts. Across all competitions he has racked up 80 goals and 65 assists in 291 appearances, numbers that underline both end product and longevity in one of Europe’s most demanding tactical environments.

His performances have brought heavy labels. British GQ branded him a “global superstar”. Max Allegri and CBS Sports have both called him “world-class”. Milan knew exactly what they had and, at his peak, quoted suitors over €100million (£87m).

That price has dropped. A disappointing campaign, coupled with Leao’s refusal to sign a new contract, has shifted the dynamic. Milan are now prepared to cash in for around €50m (£43.5m), a fee that turns a previously untouchable asset into one of this summer’s most intriguing opportunities.

United have already been put in the loop. On May 1, intermediaries offered Leao’s services to the club, with his camp actively pushing for a move.

United, Fenerbahce and the pull of the Premier League

The interest is not limited to England. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as of May 23, United and Fenerbahce are the two clubs showing the strongest intent.

On paper, that is a contest with a clear favourite.

Fenerbahce remain a giant of Turkish football and can offer passion, pressure and European football. What they cannot offer is the global spotlight of the Premier League or the chance to walk a path once carved by Leao’s idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, at Old Trafford.

For a player who has openly spoken about his admiration for United and the English game, the appeal is obvious. A move to Manchester would finally deliver the Premier League stage he has long been linked with – and give him the chance to step into the same corridors once owned by Ronaldo.

PSG and Bayern wait, INEOS plot

Leao’s name has not been confined to Manchester boardrooms. Paris Saint‑Germain and Bayern Munich have also been offered the chance to sign him, just as United have. For now, though, both clubs are understood to be prioritising other targets.

That leaves United with a window of opportunity, one INEOS seem keen to exploit.

On April 30, it emerged that the new football powerbrokers at Old Trafford were prepared to get creative, with suggestions they could offer Milan up to three players in part‑exchange to drive the fee even lower. For a club working to reshape an unbalanced squad, the idea of using surplus assets to land an elite left-sided forward carries obvious logic.

Leao would not arrive alone from Serie A if United get their way. The club are closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson in a deal worth around £38m, and it has been claimed that, once that move is wrapped up, Leao will become their next major target from Italy.

Left flank under review

The pursuit of Leao also exposes the broader rethink on United’s left flank.

Alongside the Milan star, United are tracking Morgan Rogers, Yan Diomande and Iliman Ndiaye as they scour the market for a new option on that side. Each player brings a different profile, but none carry the same established pedigree or star power as Leao.

All of this unfolds against a backdrop of uncertainty around Marcus Rashford. United’s stance on his potential return to form has emerged amid fresh complications over a permanent move to Barcelona. Until that situation is resolved, the left wing remains a live conversation at Old Trafford.

Leao, with his blend of pace, power and one‑v‑one menace, would change that conversation in an instant.

The fee is lower. The admiration is public. The Premier League dream is clear. Now the question is simple: will United turn a flirtation into a full‑blown bid and hand Leao the stage he has been waiting for?
