Manchester United Target Liverpool Prospect Vincent Joseph

For all the bitterness and shared history between Manchester United and Liverpool, direct transfers between the clubs have been off the table for more than 60 years. The senior doors stay firmly shut. The back corridors of academy football, though, are a different story.

Every so often, one giant slips, and the other is ready to pounce.

United did it in 2021, persuading highly rated winger Ethan Ennis to walk away from Liverpool’s offer and head down the M62 to Carrington. Ennis is still on United’s books, learning the hard way on loan at Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town, a reminder that poaching a talent is only the start of the journey, not the end.

Now the same pattern threatens to repeat.

United move for Liverpool striker Vincent Joseph

According to The Secret Scout, a well-regarded voice in youth football circles, Liverpool’s 16-year-old striker Vincent Joseph “looks set to leave” Anfield. His omission from the club’s latest list of scholars raised eyebrows and, for rival scouts, pulses.

United, The Secret Scout reports, “hold strong interest” in the teenager. Those who have watched him closely talk about a centre-forward with real physical presence and sharp link-up play, a modern No 9 who can occupy defenders and still knit attacks together.

He is not slipping under the radar. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both sent scouts multiple times to watch Joseph, a clear sign that his reputation has already travelled beyond England.

At international level, Joseph has broken into the England U16 setup, and his club numbers hint at why he is drawing such attention. Last season he stepped up to the U18 Premier League and made just two appearances. He scored three goals. Small sample, big statement.

The Secret Scout summed up the market for a player of his profile succinctly: “Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand.”

If Liverpool cannot convince him to stay, United know they are not alone in the queue.

Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong also on United’s radar

Joseph is not the only teenager catching eyes at Old Trafford.

United and Bayern are also understood to admire Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, a towering 20-year-old regarded as one of the standout prospects in the London club’s system. As relayed recently by The Peoples Person, United have added Acheampong to their list of potential recruits.

Chelsea, though, have taken a hard line. Reports indicate they have already turned down approaches from several unnamed clubs and view Acheampong as untouchable. For now, at least, that door appears bolted.

INEOS plan blends star power with future bets

Much of the noise around INEOS and Manchester United since Champions League qualification has centred on marquee signings and headline names. Big fees. Big reputations. Big pressure.

Yet the pursuit of players like Joseph and Acheampong tells another part of the story. United’s hierarchy are not just chasing the finished article; they are trying to rebuild the talent pipeline that once defined the club’s identity.

If they can tempt a Liverpool striker to cross the divide and prise a defensive gem from Chelsea’s grip, it will say as much about United’s long-term project as any blockbuster deal this summer.

The question now is simple: in a market starved of genuine No 9s and elite young defenders, how many of these battles can they actually win?
