Manchester United Sign Young Welsh Keeper Kit Margetson

Manchester United have moved again in the market, tying down one for the future while pushing hard for a marquee addition in midfield.

Kit Margetson, a highly rated 19-year-old goalkeeper, has completed his move to Old Trafford after leaving Swansea City at the end of his contract. United have agreed a compensation package with the Championship club, who are entitled to a fee after nurturing him from Under-15 level through to the fringes of the first team.

For Margetson, this is a significant step. Last season he left the academy bubble and went into the rough and tumble of senior football with Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Cymru Premier. He responded with 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances and played a central role in the club’s push to European qualification.

That loan spell, away from the safety net of Swansea’s system, hardened his reputation. It also confirmed what those inside Welsh football already knew: this is a goalkeeper with both pedigree and personality. The Wales Under-21 international made his debut at that level against Belarus in March and has been on the radar of bigger clubs for some time.

There is also the family thread. Margetson is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea goalkeeper who now works as Wales’ goalkeeping coach. Kit grew up around dressing rooms and training grounds, watching the position up close long before he pulled on his own gloves at senior level.

Swansea gave him his platform. He progressed through their youth ranks, became a regular part of the wider senior squad and was named in a first-team matchday group for a Championship fixture against Millwall towards the end of the 2024-25 season. Now he swaps Fairwood for Carrington, following a well-trodden path from a club famed for its coaching to one demanding constant success.

He is not walking into Old Trafford alone, either. Margetson becomes the second Welsh goalkeeper to join United this summer, after Karl Darlow arrived on a free transfer following his departure from Leeds. The reshaping of United’s goalkeeping department is clear: more depth, more competition, and a blend of experience and youth behind the established No 1.

Midfield rebuild targets Manu Kone

While the goalkeeping ranks are being refreshed, United’s real statement work may come in midfield.

The club have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, signalling a clear attempt to rebuild the core of their side. Now they are accelerating plans for a third midfield recruit, with Manu Kone emerging as a leading target.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, United have reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with the Roma midfielder, who caught the eye with France at the World Cup. Those performances on the biggest stage pushed him into the wider European conversation, and the race for his signature has grown increasingly crowded.

United are said to be readying an offer worth close to €50 million (£42.7m). That sort of fee underlines how seriously they view Kone’s potential impact. It also reflects the reality of the market: powerful, press-resistant midfielders in their prime years do not come cheap.

The deal is far from straightforward. Chelsea are monitoring the situation, Atletico Madrid remain in the frame, and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli are also credited with interest. United, then, are in a fight – not only to convince Kone of their project, but to move quickly enough in a window where hesitation can prove fatal.

As Margetson settles into life at Carrington, the next few weeks will show whether United can match their long-term planning in goal with a decisive strike in midfield.
