Kimmich to Remain Germany Captain Under Klopp

Germany may be licking their wounds after a flat Round of 32 World Cup exit, but one key pillar of the national side looks set to remain untouched: the captain’s armband on Joshua Kimmich’s arm.

Sporting director Rudi Völler, speaking at the International Coaches’ Congress in Mainz, made it clear he does not expect a change in leadership when Jürgen Klopp steps into the dugout.

“I assume so,” Völler said when asked if Kimmich would stay on as captain, according to DPA. The answer was brief, but the message behind it was anything but vague.

Völler then underlined why the 29-year-old continues to command such trust within the DFB hierarchy.

“Jo Kimmich has proven in many international matches that he is a leader and a great captain. I cannot imagine there will be any major change in that position.”

The World Cup exit has triggered calls in some quarters for a reset, a symbolic break with the recent past. The armband is often the first place people look. Not this time, if Völler’s reading of the situation is accurate.

He did, however, acknowledge the obvious: the final word belongs to Klopp.

The new head coach has yet to take charge of a match, yet his public comments are already being dissected for clues. Völler hinted that those clues all point in the same direction.

“We have all followed what he has said. You didn’t really get the impression that anything else was planned.”

Kimmich only took over the captaincy after Euro 2024, inheriting it from Ilkay Gündogan. It was framed then as a natural evolution, a player long seen as the emotional barometer of the side finally made its formal leader.

Now, after another early tournament exit, the question is not whether Kimmich can wear the armband, but whether he can help redefine what it stands for in the Klopp era.
