Manchester United's Midfield Overhaul: Fernandes and Ederson Deals
Manchester United are moving into gear for a major midfield overhaul – and West Ham’s João Gomes Fernandes is rapidly climbing their shortlist.
With West Ham dropping out of the Premier League, United see an opening. They are expected to make contact soon to formalise their interest in the 21-year-old, who has emerged as one of three midfield targets for the summer window.
United believe Fernandes will be available and are working to understand the conditions of a deal. Inside Old Trafford, his valuation sits around the £50 million mark. The question now is simple: can they get him for a fee that fits their new, harder line on spending?
West Ham, for their part, are not expected to roll over. Figures close to the London club anticipate a push to draw more clubs into the chase, hoping to trigger a bidding war and squeeze every last pound from a prized asset. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have already been credibly linked, adding another layer of tension to United’s pursuit.
Ederson deal sets the template
United’s interest in Fernandes comes as they edge towards what they hope will be a defining early move of the summer: Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta.
An agreement for Ederson is increasingly viewed as likely, with a fee below £35 million believed to be within reach. Inside the recruitment team, that sort of price is seen as the benchmark – the kind of value they want to repeat across the window rather than getting dragged into inflated auctions.
That stance is already shaping their thinking on other targets. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba remains highly admired, but United are reluctant to entertain anything close to Brighton’s £100 million valuation. Unless that figure softens, the admiration may stay exactly where it is – on the scouting reports rather than on the pitch.
As the window draws nearer, the club are prepared to pivot towards players they consider more realistically attainable, rather than chasing deals that clash with their new financial discipline.
Shortlist grows, but price is king
The list of midfielders under consideration is long, but each name comes with a clear caveat: only at the right price.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has admirers at Old Trafford, as does Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, whose situation remains complicated but whose talent is not in doubt. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni is another high-end option on the radar, though any serious move would hinge on Madrid’s willingness to negotiate and the scale of the fee required.
For United’s decision-makers, the strategy is clear. Three midfielders are wanted. None of them should shatter the wage structure or the transfer budget. Value, not vanity, is the watchword.
Rashford, Barcelona and a pause on the left
While United push ahead with midfield business, plans in attack are less settled.
The club may hold off on signing a left-sided forward until Marcus Rashford’s future becomes clearer. His situation remains unresolved, and the wider market is shifting around him.
Anthony Gordon’s pending move to Barcelona has thrown a shadow over Rashford’s prospects, complicating the picture. Yet there is still hope on the player’s side that a permanent move to Barca could materialise. The Catalan club retain an interest, but any serious attempt to bring him to Camp Nou will hinge on their finances and how the Gordon deal is structured.
So United wait. Midfield is being reshaped with purpose and control. On the left wing, everything hangs on one decision: stay and lead the next era at Old Trafford, or push for a new chapter in Barcelona’s colours.
