Manchester United Turns to Mateus Fernandes as Anderson Deal Falls Through
Manchester United’s new-era recruitment drive has taken another sharp turn. Elliot Anderson is off the table. Mateus Fernandes is suddenly front and centre.
Faced with Nottingham Forest’s £130million valuation of Anderson, United’s hierarchy – led by co-owners INEOS – have walked away from a deal they feel makes no sense. The message from Old Trafford is clear: they will not be dragged into a bidding war, no matter how highly they rate the player.
That stance was underlined early on June 11, when Manchester Evening News chief United correspondent Tyrone Marshall posted on X at 7:59am: “Manchester United unwilling to pay £120million for Elliot Anderson and won’t be drawn into a bidding war. They want players who want to join them and, as it stands, they are focusing on other targets, with Mateus Fernandes at the top of the list #mufc.”
So the spotlight swings to East London.
Fernandes climbs to the top of United’s list
West Ham’s relegation to the Championship has inevitably turned their best assets into targets, and few are drawing more attention than Mateus Fernandes. At 21, already a Portugal international and a central figure in West Ham’s midfield, he has become one of the most coveted names in the market.
United have moved quickly.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano revealed that the club are no longer just admirers; they are now actively working on a deal. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “Manchester United are in official contact with the agent of the player. Manchester United already started the conversation with the agent to start preparing a bid to West Ham, so Man Utd are for sure in conversations with Mateus Fernandes.”
The approach is still at the player-side stage, but the intent is unmistakable. United are laying the groundwork before going to West Ham with a formal offer.
They are not alone in the race, though, and that is where this story starts to heat up.
A crowded field: Arsenal, PSG, Real Madrid circle
Romano has made it clear that other European heavyweights are in the frame. This is not a straight shot for United. TalkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs added further detail, reporting that movement over Fernandes’ future is expected this month and that United are already in talks with his camp.
Jacobs wrote on X at 3:43pm on June 11: “Movement expected on Mateus Fernandes’ future this month. Manchester United already in talks on the player side. PSG and Arsenal also hold appreciation. Real Madrid the latest suitor to make contact. West Ham want double the £38m+£4m they paid, but despite this valuation a sale is expected.”
Real Madrid’s late arrival into the conversation only raises the stakes. Arsenal’s interest keeps the Premier League angle alive. PSG add the Paris pull. For United, that means they cannot afford to drift or dither.
The pressure is not just competitive. It is financial.
West Ham set their price
West Ham, despite relegation, are not behaving like a distressed seller. They know what they have and what they paid.
Romano reported earlier this month that the London club have fixed Fernandes’ price at £85m after a meeting with the player’s camp. On June 8, he posted at 7:04pm: “Understand Matheus Fernandes price tag has been fixed by West Ham in a meeting with his camp: £85m. Manchester United in contact with player side, more clubs also attentive and keen.”
That figure roughly doubles the £38m plus £4m add-ons West Ham invested. For a 21-year-old midfielder, it is elite-bracket money, but the expectation from multiple journalists is that a sale will happen.
So United face a familiar calculation: pay heavily now for a player they believe can anchor their midfield for years, or risk watching him choose Madrid, Arsenal or PSG and spend the next decade wondering what might have been.
The Bruno factor and United’s midfield rebuild
There is another layer to this pursuit. TEAMtalk reported on May 14 that Fernandes is “extremely keen” on a move to Old Trafford. The appeal is obvious. United remain one of the game’s biggest stages, and the chance to link up with his Portugal teammate Bruno Fernandes adds an emotional and sporting pull that others cannot quite match.
United, for their part, are already deep into a midfield overhaul. They have an agreement in place with Atalanta for Ederson Silva, and adding Mateus Fernandes on top of that would signal a dramatic reset in the centre of the pitch – younger legs, higher ceilings, a different energy.
This is exactly the kind of profile INEOS have talked about targeting: players entering their prime, hungry, with resale value and the mentality to handle Old Trafford’s glare.
Now comes the hard part. Turning conversations with agents into a concrete bid. Testing West Ham’s £85m resolve. Holding their nerve as Madrid, Arsenal and PSG circle the same prize.
If Manchester United truly want Mateus Fernandes at the heart of their next midfield, this is the moment they show it.
