Manchester United's Helsinki Squad: Carrick Era Begins

Manchester United’s summer reset moves from the training pitch to the pitch that really counts this week, as Michael Carrick leads his side into a pre-season opener against Wrexham in Helsinki – with one new signing on the plane and two notable absentees left behind.

United have confirmed a youthful, experimental squad for the friendly, headlined by Andrey Santos, the midfielder snapped up from Chelsea earlier this month. The Brazilian is the standout new face in a group that mixes senior figures with academy prospects auditioning for a place in Carrick’s plans.

The message is clear: the honeymoon is over, and the work starts now.

Carrick’s first full pre-season

United ended the 2025/26 campaign with a sense of momentum, finishing third in the Premier League and sealing a return to the Champions League. That late surge turned Carrick’s caretaker stint, inherited from Ruben Amorim, into a full-time appointment.

Now comes the harder part. Building a team in his own image.

Helsinki is the first stop on a demanding pre-season route that will take United to Norway, Sweden and Ireland before the serious business begins in mid-August. The Wrexham game is the opening test of fitness, structure and attitude under a manager whose calm exterior masks a ruthless streak when it comes to standards.

Some of United’s established first-team players are only just back from their summer break, particularly those who skipped the World Cup and have had a longer off-season to recharge. Carrick’s early sessions at Carrington have focused on conditioning and re-establishing the principles that underpinned last season’s strong finish.

Santos in, Tielemans and Darlow wait

All eyes in Finland will be on Santos. The 20-year-old arrives from Chelsea with a reputation as a dynamic, all-court midfielder, and Helsinki offers a first glimpse of how Carrick intends to use him.

Two other new arrivals, though, will have to wait for their turn.

Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow are both absent from the travelling party. In Tielemans’ case, the omission is purely down to workload. The Belgian has been granted extra time off after featuring at the World Cup, where Belgium’s “other” Red Devils went out at the quarter-final stage to Spain.

United moved quickly to trigger the £35 million release clause in his Aston Villa contract, securing a midfielder whose passing range and experience should immediately raise the level of the squad. His integration will come later in pre-season.

Darlow, the experienced goalkeeper, is also not involved in the Wrexham fixture, leaving Tom Heaton and youngsters Radek Vitek and Dermot Mee to share the gloves in Helsinki.

Youthful edge to United’s travelling party

The squad itself underlines the club’s commitment to blending youth with established names.

In defence, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw provide senior ballast around a cluster of emerging talents. New signing Leny Yoro is included, joined by Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Ayden Heaven, Harry Amass, Jaydan Kamason and Dan Armer. For several of them, this is a chance to impress Carrick in a match environment rather than behind closed doors at Carrington.

Midfield offers a similar mix. Mason Mount and Santos are the headline names, but they will be flanked by a string of academy and development prospects: Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher, Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Jacob Devaney and Jim Thwaites. Pre-season has often been the launchpad for United youngsters; the opportunity is there again.

Up front, Joshua Zirkzee and Bryan Mbeumo bring top-level pedigree to a forward line otherwise packed with youth. Chido Obi, Ethan Wheatley, Shea Lacey and Ethan Williams will all be eager to seize any minutes they can get, knowing that a sharp cameo in July can influence selection in September.

United’s full squad for the Wrexham friendly:

  • Goalkeepers: Tom Heaton, Radek Vitek, Dermot Mee.
  • Defenders: Harry Maguire, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Harry Amass, Jaydan Kamason, Dan Armer.
  • Midfielders: Mason Mount, Andrey Santos, Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher, Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Jacob Devaney, Jim Thwaites.
  • Forwards: Joshua Zirkzee, Bryan Mbeumo, Chido Obi, Ethan Wheatley, Shea Lacey, Ethan Williams.

A demanding summer and a brutal start

The Wrexham match is just the opening chapter. From Finland, United head to Norway for a meeting with Rosenborg, a fixture that will test both fitness and tactical cohesion in a more hostile environment.

Then comes a marquee date in Stockholm against Atletico Madrid, Champions League semi-finalists last season and perennial specialists in defensive organisation and counter-attacking menace. That game should offer a far clearer measure of where Carrick’s side stands against elite European opposition.

After Scandinavia, the schedule toughens again. Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds United and AC Milan await, each posing different questions about United’s defensive resilience, attacking patterns and squad depth.

They will need every bit of that preparation. The Premier League campaign opens with a trip to newly promoted Hull City in mid-August, followed by another clash with fresh top-flight blood in Ipswich Town at Old Trafford. On paper, it looks kind. In reality, promoted sides often bring chaos, energy and nothing to lose.

Then the temperature rises. Everton, Manchester City and Fulham line up before the extended autumn international break, a run that will quickly expose any early-season frailties.

Somewhere in that early storm, United will also step back into the Champions League, this time under the revamped League Phase format. New structure, new rhythms, new demands on a squad that must juggle domestic and European ambitions with far less margin for error.

Carrick’s first full summer in charge begins with a low-key friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki. By the time Hull, City and the Champions League roll around, we will know whether this is simply a continuation of last season’s surge – or the start of something more substantial.
