Andrey Santos Set for Manchester United Debut Against Wrexham

Andrey Santos is in line for his first appearance in Manchester United colours on Saturday, named in the travelling squad for the pre-season friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki.

The 22-year-old Brazilian, Michael Carrick’s first permanent signing, arrived from Chelsea on Monday in a deal that could rise to £50 million. He has had only a handful of sessions at Carrington, but that has been enough for United’s staff to fast-track him into a 25-man group that blends established names with academy hopefuls.

Carrick’s new era takes shape

This is the first real glimpse of Carrick’s rebuild on the pitch. Santos is joined in the squad by a strong core of first-teamers: Harry Maguire, Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee all make the trip to Finland.

Not everyone is ready yet. Youri Tielemans and several other senior players are still on a staggered return after their World Cup exertions and will remain behind to continue their programmes.

Up front, there is one notable absentee. Benjamin Sesko has not travelled as he continues to work back to full fitness following the shin injury that ruled him out of the final three games of last season. His absence changes the dynamic of the tour party. Without the Slovenia striker, the door swings open for younger forwards Chidi Obi and Ethan Wheatley to stake a claim. JJ Gabriel, however, is not included.

At the back, Jaydan Kamason will hope for minutes at right-back, while teenage defenders Harry Amass and Shea Lacey are also involved, part of a cluster of youngsters Carrick and his staff want to see under match pressure.

The midfield is crowded with potential. Alongside Santos and Mount, prospects Jacob Devaney, Dan Gore and Jim Thwaites have all travelled, as have Tyler and Jack Fletcher, adding an extra layer of competition in the centre of the pitch.

In goal, new signing Karl Darlow, who joined on a free from Leeds earlier in the week, has been left at home as he settles into his new surroundings. Veteran Tom Heaton is set to provide the experience between the posts, supported by Radek Vitek and Dermot Mee.

Wrexham fine-tune before U.S. tour

For Wrexham, this Helsinki stop is a key staging post before a high-profile tour of the United States, where they are due to face Leeds, Liverpool and Sunderland.

Manager Phil Parkinson insists his squad are broadly where they need to be in terms of conditioning, even if a few niggles have shaped his selection. Josh Windass and Max Cleworth have not travelled.

“Josh has been running this week. He’s had a slight problem with his calf, but he’s in great shape and there’s no need to rush him too much,” Parkinson said. Cleworth, dealing with a persistent Achilles issue, is being eased back with a “slow build-up” the club believe will benefit him over the season.

So Wrexham arrive in Finland short of two familiar faces, but with their manager confident in the group’s fitness and mindset. United, meanwhile, bring a squad that tells its own story: a marquee new midfielder, a reshaped core, and a clutch of academy players sensing an opening.

For Santos, it could be the first step in justifying that £50m fee. For Carrick, it is another small but significant marker in the evolution of his United.
