Manchester United Eyes £80m Midfield Reinforcement as Carrick Reshapes Squad
Manchester United’s rebuild under Michael Carrick is gathering pace – and it’s not coming cheap.
With one deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson reportedly in place, United are preparing to push again in the market, with their next target expected to cost around £80million. That is the figure they are likely to have to meet if they want to beat off rival interest and land their preferred option for a second midfield signing.
Carrick has made no secret inside the club of where he sees the biggest hole. Casemiro’s departure has left a sizeable gap at the heart of United’s side, and with a return to the Champions League looming next season, there is little appetite at Old Trafford to go into Europe underpowered in the engine room.
Ederson is viewed as a major part of that solution. The Brazilian’s arrival from Atalanta would add energy and bite, but United do not intend to stop there. Plans are already well advanced for another central midfielder, with recruitment staff working on a second deal to give Carrick the depth and balance he wants in front of his back four.
The message is clear: United intend to go into next season with a very different midfield profile, and they are prepared to spend heavily to get it.
Maguire turns to the mic after World Cup snub
While United chase reinforcements, one of their most high‑profile defenders is preparing for a very different kind of summer.
Harry Maguire has once again been left out of a major international tournament, omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the World Cup. At 33, it is the second consecutive tournament he has missed, after injury ruled him out of Euro 2024.
This time, though, Maguire will not disappear from view. According to The Athletic, the Manchester United centre-back is set to appear on The Rest is Football podcast during the competition, joining a roster of guests lined up for the show.
The podcast, hosted by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, has become one of the most influential voices in the game. Across 40 episodes during the tournament, the former England strikers will broadcast from a studio overlooking New York’s Times Square, with Maguire expected to be among the names dropping in to share insight and stories as the action unfolds.
He may not be on the plane, but Maguire will still have a World Cup role – this time with a microphone instead of a captain’s armband, while back at Old Trafford, Carrick and United push on with a rebuild that could define their next Champions League campaign.
