Manchester City Pursue Anderson Amid Nottingham Forest's Firm Stance

Manchester City have set their sights on Anderson as the next piece in their midfield rebuild – but Nottingham Forest have made it brutally clear he will not come cheap.

The Premier League champions view the 23-year-old as an ideal fit for their high-intensity, possession-dominant game. His versatility, his engine, his ability to slot into complex tactical structures: all of it has pushed him towards the top of City’s shortlist as they look to refresh the centre of the pitch for the long term.

City’s first move, though, has already hit a wall.

According to The Athletic, Forest have rejected an initial approach and drawn a firm line in the sand. Anderson is regarded as one of the pillars of Vitor Pereira’s side, and the club have no intention of letting a core player go on the cheap. They are under no financial pressure to sell and have told City, in effect: if you want him, prove it with a huge offer.

This is not just brinkmanship. Forest invested heavily to bring Anderson in from Newcastle and have built much of their recent planning around him. He has become central to their long-term vision, both in terms of style and status within the squad. Any deal, the hierarchy have made clear, would have to meet their valuation in full. No discounts. No cut-price compromise.

The message reverberates beyond Manchester. By taking such a hard stance with City, Forest are sending a signal to the rest of Europe: Anderson is available only at a premium, if at all.

On the pitch, his rise explains the resistance. Since arriving from Newcastle, Anderson has grown rapidly into a driving force at the City Ground. He has turned into a guaranteed starter, trusted to carry the ball from deep and inject tempo into Forest’s play, while matching that attacking ambition with relentless work out of possession.

The numbers from last season tell their own story. In 2025-26, he featured in all 38 Premier League matches, starting 37. That level of durability and consistency, at 23, is exactly what top clubs crave in a modern midfielder.

His progress has not gone unnoticed at international level either. Thomas Tuchel named him in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a selection that underlined how far his reputation has climbed in a short space of time.

For City, that only strengthens the appeal. They do not see Anderson as a rotation piece or a short-term fix. The view inside the club is that he could grow into a future leader of their midfield, someone to carry the baton in an area of the pitch that has defined their era of dominance.

Now comes the decision.

Do City push again, this time with the kind of “mammoth” bid Forest say it would take to even start serious talks? Or do they walk away and move on to alternative targets who might come at a more palatable price?

The profile is perfect. The price, less so. Forest’s stance will test just how badly City want him.

At the City Ground, the priority is stability. Forest know that to progress, they must hold on to their best players, not simply cash in when a superclub comes calling. For now, Anderson stays, a key figure in Pereira’s plans and a symbol of where Forest want to go.

But when one of Europe’s giants circles a player of his age and trajectory, the story rarely ends with a single rejected bid. As the window unfolds, the question is simple: will Forest’s resolve hold, or will City’s need for their next midfield cornerstone force them back to the table with an offer too big to ignore?
