Liverpool's Pursuit of Yan Diomande Falls Short

Liverpool’s late charge for Yan Diomande looks doomed to fall short, with the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger set on joining PSG and the French champions now closing in on a deal that underlines their pulling power at the very top of the market.

Liverpool’s €100m swing – and the Salah void

The plan was clear from the moment Mohamed Salah’s contract was ripped up and the Egyptian walked away at the end of last season. A gaping hole opened on the right of Liverpool’s attack, and inside the recruitment meetings at Anfield, one name was written in bold: Yan Diomande.

The Ivorian, comfortable operating off that right flank, was elevated to top-target status as soon as the window opened. Liverpool moved aggressively. An official bid worth €100m (£85m) went in to Leipzig.

The structure of that offer has been debated. Some sources put it at €90m plus €10m in add-ons, others at €80m with a further €20m in bonuses. The detail hardly matters now. The bottom line is simple: €100m on the table, and Leipzig said no.

That rejection might have been survivable. What came next hurt more. Diomande made it clear he wanted PSG.

PSG’s president steps in

At that point, Liverpool’s pursuit looked effectively over. Attention at Fenway Sports Group began to tilt towards Bradley Barcola, the PSG winger whose future in Paris could be squeezed by Diomande’s arrival.

Then came a twist. As revealed by TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Liverpool were not alone in making late moves. Arsenal and Manchester City also came forward with approaches, testing the water around a player who has quickly become one of Europe’s most coveted wide forwards.

Of those three, Liverpool were the most invested. They had already pushed a nine-figure proposal across the line and still needed a Salah successor. This was their fight.

The problem? Diomande’s mind, according to Bailey, is made up. He wants PSG.

Any suggestion that PSG were cooling on the deal has been shut down. Bailey reports that club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has now taken personal control of negotiations with Leipzig, a significant escalation that has changed the tone of the talks.

Al-Khelaifi’s long-standing relationship with Red Bull’s hierarchy has given PSG a crucial edge. Once the president stepped in, discussions accelerated. Inside Leipzig, there is now an acceptance that Diomande is heading for Paris. Resignation has replaced resistance.

Sources close to the deal believe an agreement is drawing near.

The numbers that seal it

PSG are prepared to go above Liverpool’s rejected offer. The French champions are ready to pay around €110m (£93.5m) to get the transfer over the line, a figure that better reflects Leipzig’s valuation and the leverage created by Diomande’s clear preference.

For Leipzig, the equation has shifted. They have a player pushing for a move to a specific club and a bid that finally matches their expectations. Internally, they have already accepted that Diomande is closing in on a move to Paris.

For PSG, this is a statement. For Liverpool, it is a door closing.

Liverpool turn back to Barcola

With Diomande slipping from their grasp, Liverpool must pivot. The focus swings back to Bradley Barcola, whose situation at PSG is growing increasingly delicate.

The France international has hit an impasse with the Ligue 1 champions over a new and improved contract. Talks have stalled. PSG, for all their financial muscle, are not in the habit of over-indulging every demand, especially with another high-profile winger on the way.

Barcola can leave for the right price. Liverpool know that, and they know the clock is ticking.

They entered this window wanting Diomande as the jewel of a new-look forward line. Instead, they are watching PSG close in on him, powered by presidential intervention and a player’s clear desire to wear Parisian colours.

Now the question for Liverpool is stark: can Barcola be more than a consolation prize, and can he carry the weight of replacing Salah in a team that has just seen its “true prize” slip towards the Parc des Princes?
