Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United career has never really left the runway. Now Juventus are trying to give it a new destination.

The Italian giants are in advanced talks with United over a loan deal for the Dutch striker that would include a £30million option to buy. For a player who arrived in 2024 with promise and pedigree, it already feels like decision time.

A United stint that never caught fire

Zirkzee came to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich with the aura of a forward ready to grow into the shirt. He has never managed it.

Five goals in 56 Premier League appearances tell the story. Not a lack of talent, but a lack of impact. He failed to nail down a place under Ruben Amorim and has not convinced Michael Carrick either. At 25, he finds himself stuck behind Benjamin Sesko and Mateus Cunha in the pecking order, with Marcus Rashford’s potential return threatening to push him even further back.

The frustration has been building. Zirkzee wanted out in January, only for United to block a move. He stayed, waited, and hoped.

Yet he still believes there is a path for him in Manchester. Those close to the player suggest he sees European football in 2026/27 as a chance to finally carve out a role under Carrick, who is reshaping the squad with a clear, structured vision. Zirkzee wants to be part of that. United, though, are no longer sure he should be.

Juventus move to the front of the queue

The tension between player ambition and club reality has opened the door for Juventus.

The Turin club had been pursuing France international Kolo Muani after his underwhelming loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but talks with Paris Saint-Germain stalled over the fee. As those negotiations dragged, Juve pivoted sharply. Zirkzee became the target.

Juventus are now described as the most serious contender for his signature. Roma have tracked him for a long time and retain interest, yet it is Juve who have moved with real intent and speed, putting them in pole position.

Crucially, Zirkzee knows exactly what awaits him in Serie A. One loan season at Parma, two strong years at Bologna: Italy’s top flight is familiar ground. The tactical rhythm of the league suits his game, with its emphasis on movement, timing and link-up play rather than sheer physicality. Those around him are said to view a return to Italy as a natural fit.

His representatives have responded positively to Juventus’ approach. They see opportunity where, at United, there has mostly been waiting.

United ready to cut their losses

From United’s perspective, the numbers are blunt.

They paid around £36.5m to bring Zirkzee in two years ago. Now they are prepared to sanction a loan with a £30m option to buy. Club officials are said to accept that the figure reflects his current value, shaped less by potential and more by what he has actually delivered: flashes in pre-season, not enough substance in the league.

His recent display in the 5-0 pre-season win over Rosenborg was a reminder of what he can do when confidence flows and the game opens up. He linked play, stretched defenders, and looked every inch the modern centre-forward United thought they were signing.

But pre-season form has never been his problem. Doing it week after week in the Premier League has.

Carrick’s squad is evolving, the attack being rebuilt around sharper, more decisive profiles. With Sesko and Cunha ahead of him and Rashford looming, Zirkzee faces the prospect of another season on the fringes if he stays.

A career at a crossroads

So the choice is stark.

Stay at Old Trafford, fight for minutes, and hope that a European campaign in 2026/27 finally opens a door that has stayed stubbornly shut. Or head back to a league that understands him, to a club of Juventus’ stature, where the tactical environment may give him the stage he has been missing.

United appear ready to move on. Juventus are ready to move in.
