Johan Manzambi: Bayern Munich's Next Target as United Circle
Thomas Müller has seen enough. From his vantage point as a Bayern Munich great and keen student of the game, the 34-year-old is now openly urging his former club to move before Manchester United do and snap up Switzerland’s latest World Cup breakout, Johan Manzambi.
The stage for Manzambi’s statement performance could hardly have been more glamorous. Under the lights at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the 20-year-old came off the bench and ripped through Bosnia and Herzegovina, scoring twice in a 4-1 win and announcing himself to a global audience.
United’s scouts were already watching.
United circling, Bayern warned
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is in full swing. Casemiro has gone, Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow, and the club are bracing to welcome £35million signing Ederson Silva to Old Trafford this summer. The plan is clear: refresh Michael Carrick’s engine room, add legs, add goals, add versatility.
Ederson will not be the only one.
United remain firmly in the hunt for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes despite Tottenham’s interest, while sources indicate Real Madrid are softening their stance on a potential sale of Aurelien Tchouameni, a long-standing target for both United and Liverpool. Reports from Italy also link the Red Devils with Croatia international Martin Baturina, the versatile Como midfielder who caught the eye with a goal against England in his country’s World Cup opener.
Into that crowded midfield shortlist strides Manzambi, the Freiburg livewire who has been on United’s radar for months. TEAMtalk sources first revealed interest from Old Trafford back in March, with Arsenal also tracking the Swiss youngster.
Now Müller wants Bayern to cut across the traffic.
Müller’s verdict: “FC Bayern should also consider him”
Having watched Manzambi torment Bosnia and Herzegovina, Müller did not hide his admiration when speaking to MagentaTV.
“He’s a good player overall. We’ve had him on our list for a while now,” Müller said. “For me, he’s someone, and now we can make a headline, that FC Bayern should also consider.
“You can sense his flexibility. You can also sense his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his actions, in his decision-making, his work ethic.
“He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good.
“He’s a player who can play as No.6, he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”
When a man who has won 33 trophies in Bayern colours talks like that, people in Munich tend to listen.
Freiburg’s gem steps into the spotlight
Manzambi’s rise has been anything but accidental. Last season he emerged as one of Freiburg’s standout performers in the Bundesliga, contributing five goals and four assists and showing exactly the blend Müller admires: tactical intelligence, positional flexibility and a willingness to graft.
Those numbers, in a demanding system and a fiercely competitive league, inevitably attracted attention. By the time he arrived in North America with Switzerland, several clubs were already circling. His brace at the World Cup has only intensified the noise.
For Manzambi himself, the moment clearly meant everything.
“Honestly, it’s incredible, it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that,” he said after the game. “Scoring two goals in front of the fans and my family, that’s very, very nice. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.”
He might not be the only one lying awake. With Bayern being pushed from within by Müller, United accelerating their midfield rebuild, and Arsenal still in the conversation, the question now is simple: who moves first for Johan Manzambi – and who is left wondering how they let him get away?
