James Garner's Race to Recovery for Everton's Premier League Season
Everton’s carefully mapped pre-season has been dealt a jolt. James Garner, one of the standout performers of last year’s survival grind, has undergone surgery on a groin problem and is now in a race against time to be ready for the opening week of the Premier League season.
The issue was picked up in the early days of pre-season, a concern serious enough to keep the midfielder out of the first friendly at Dundee last weekend while club medics carried out further assessments. Those checks led to a clear conclusion: an operation was required.
Everton say the procedure went well. Garner is already back at Finch Farm, beginning his rehabilitation programme and, crucially, working towards a return to first-team training around the start of the league campaign, subject to his recovery continuing on schedule.
“The Blues midfielder has begun his rehabilitation at Finch Farm and is progressing as expected, with a return to first-team training being targeted around the opening week of the Premier League season, subject to his continued recovery,” the club confirmed.
For Sean Dyche, the timing is far from ideal. Garner was not just a regular last season; he was a driving force in midfield, a player who embraced responsibility during a year dominated by off-field turmoil and points deductions. Losing him, even briefly, strips energy and balance from the core of the side.
The setback lands in the same summer Everton confirmed Idrissa Gueye would not return following the expiration of his contract. One experienced midfielder gone, another temporarily sidelined. The need to reinforce the middle of the pitch was already on the agenda; Garner’s situation only sharpens that focus. The club are understood to be targeting another midfielder as they reshape the squad.
Garner was one of several notable absentees from the squad that travelled to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Tyler Dibling sat out with what Everton described as a “minor knock”, while Hayden Hackney, one of three summer signings, also missed the game as he continues to be “integrated” into the group after his move from Middlesbrough.
There is less concern over those two. Everton expect both Dibling and Hackney to feature in Tuesday’s friendly at Stoke City, valuable minutes as Dyche tries to build rhythm and understanding in a squad that has already felt a few early bumps.
Garner’s situation is different. His target is not the next friendly, but the start of the season itself. For a player who grew into a central figure last year, the challenge now is to win a different kind of battle – against the clock, and against a groin that chose the wrong moment to complain.
