Iker Casillas Opposes José Mourinho's Return to Real Madrid
Iker Casillas has stepped firmly into the debate over Real Madrid’s future on the bench, making it clear he does not want to see José Mourinho back at the Santiago Bernabéu.
With Madrid coming off a barren season and pressure mounting on the club’s hierarchy, Mourinho has surged to the top of the shortlist to return to a job he last held more than a decade ago. In Spain, reports say Florentino Pérez views the Portuguese coach as the man to bring order to a dressing room that has frayed under the strain of a turbulent campaign.
Casillas is not convinced.
The former captain, a symbol of the club’s modern era and one of its most respected voices, responded to the growing speculation on social media and drew a line.
“I have no problem with Mourinho. He seems like a great professional to me. I don’t want him at Real Madrid. I think other coaches would be better equipped to coach at the club of my life. Personal opinion. Nothing more,” he posted.
No ambiguity. Respect for the coach, but a clear “no” to a reunion.
Mourinho’s first spell in Madrid, from 2010 to 2013, was anything but quiet. He delivered trophies — La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup — and built a fiercely competitive side that went toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona. He also split opinion inside and outside the club.
At the heart of that tension stood Casillas. The relationship between the legendary goalkeeper and the demanding Portuguese manager deteriorated sharply, ending with Casillas losing his place in the starting XI. That decision became one of the defining flashpoints of Mourinho’s tenure and a wound that never truly healed in the public eye.
Now, as Pérez weighs up whether to turn back to a coach he once trusted to shake the club to its core, one of Real Madrid’s greatest captains has made his stance public.
The president wants authority in the dressing room. Casillas is asking if that authority should come from a different voice.
