Erling Haaland and Norway's Challenge Against Brazil

Erling Haaland had just dragged Norway into territory a generation of his countrymen had only talked about. He scored the decisive goal against Ivory Coast, sealed a place in the World Cup last 16 for the first time in 28 years – and then immediately poured cold water on any idea of a fairytale stroll past Brazil.

Norway’s superstar did not play to the underdog script. No soaring declarations. No chest-beating.

“The probability [to eliminate Brazil] is very small,” he admitted after the narrow last‑32 win on Tuesday. “Facing Brazil in the round of 16 is what we must face now. We’ve advanced to the next round, where we’ll face even better teams. The matches won’t be easy, and advancing will be very difficult.

“I don’t know if we will succeed, but we are ready and will continue to be highly prepared.”

A blunt assessment from a striker who usually bends games, not odds.

Haaland delivers, history looms

Against Ivory Coast, the Manchester City forward did exactly what Norway needed. One chance in the box, one ruthless finish from six yards. That was enough to push a nation into the knockout rounds for the first time since the late 1990s, when Norway last dared to dream on this stage.

Now comes Brazil. The name alone changes the air around a World Cup tie. For Norway, it also stirs one of the country’s most cherished football memories.

In 1998, in Marseille, Norway stunned the world. Two late goals turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win over Brazil, the only World Cup meeting between the sides. That night has lived on in Norwegian football folklore ever since.

The echo of that comeback will hang over this round-of-16 clash. Same opponent. Same imbalance in pedigree. The same sense that Norway must punch far above its weight.

Haaland, though, is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. His realism underlines the scale of the task, but it also hints at something else: Norway know exactly what they are walking into. They are under no illusions, no delusions. They are here, at last, and they are going to swing at one of the giants.

The probability may be “very small.” The opportunity is anything but.
