Chiefs Advance in Maxwele Transfer Battle
Kaizer Chiefs have moved ahead of Orlando Pirates in the chase for in-demand midfielder Maxwele, but the deal now sits squarely in the hands of Golden Arrows boss Mato Madlala.
With the transfer window opening on 1 July, Amakhosi have wasted little time. According to well-placed club insider Innocent Mkhize, Chiefs have already agreed personal terms with the 25-year-old as they look to inject fresh legs and aggression into their midfield for the new campaign.
On paper, that’s a major breakthrough. In reality, it’s only half the job done.
Madlala must still decide whether to cash in on one of Arrows’ standout performers – and, crucially, who she is prepared to sell to. Mkhize claims the chairlady would rather see Maxwele join Orlando Pirates than head to Naturena, a stance that threatens to ignite another full-blooded transfer battle between the two Soweto giants.
If that preference holds, Chiefs’ early work could be dragged into a drawn-out saga.
A breakout season that changed everything
Maxwele has earned this attention the hard way.
He arrived at Golden Arrows as a free agent after the dramatic expulsion of Royal AM from the Premier Soccer League in 2025, stepping into a dressing room that needed stability and bite. He gave them both.
Across the league campaign, he featured 23 times, anchoring and driving the midfield, while also making his presence felt in cup competitions. Three goals and one assist don’t leap off the page, but the numbers only tell part of the story.
Coaches and scouts noticed the rest.
Maxwele built a reputation for relentless running and aggressive pressing, harrying opponents high up the pitch and snapping into duels. When he wins it, he doesn’t just recycle possession; he carries the ball through the lines, dragging his team up the field. That blend of steel and forward thrust allows him to operate centrally or drift into wider attacking zones, giving his coaches tactical flexibility and his markers a persistent headache.
It’s that energy, that versatility, that has pushed him onto the radars of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
Soweto giants circle as window nears
For now, Chiefs hold the advantage where it counts with the player himself. Personal terms agreed, role outlined, project sold. Maxwele, by all indications, is ready to wear gold and black.
But the transfer will not be settled in a boardroom at Naturena.
Golden Arrows and Madlala must decide whether to accept Chiefs’ move or steer negotiations towards Pirates, who are also understood to admire the midfielder’s profile. If Madlala pushes for a Buccaneers deal, the rivalry shifts from the pitch to the negotiating table once again, with Maxwele at the centre of it.
The window is about to open. The race is already on.
Now it comes down to one decision in the Arrows boardroom: does Maxwele drive up to Naturena, or is he destined for Mayfair instead?
