Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers for 2026/27 Season
Ben Godfrey’s long road from York City prospect to Premier League regular has taken another sharp turn. The 28-year-old defender has signed for Rangers ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, joining on a deal that includes an option to make the move permanent next summer.
It is a significant capture. This is a player capped at senior level for England, a defender who has lived in the intensity of the Premier League, the scrutiny of international football, and the tactical demands of Serie A. Now he arrives in Glasgow with one clear message: he is here to win.
“I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here,” Godfrey said after completing the move. “I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I can’t wait to get started. I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”
Those words will land well with a support that expects trophies, not promises.
A career built the hard way
Godfrey’s path has never been the glamorous, fast-tracked route. He started at his hometown club York City, learning his trade away from the spotlight. From there, Norwich City’s academy picked him up, and that step changed everything.
By the 2018/19 season he had forced his way into the Norwich first team, becoming a regular at the heart of the side that surged to promotion to the English Premier League. He did not just fill a shirt; he anchored a defence in a campaign that transformed the club’s trajectory.
His performances drew attention. In the summer of 2020, Everton moved to bring him to Goodison Park. He made his debut in one of the most unforgiving fixtures English football can offer: the Merseyside derby, a 2-2 draw that underlined the stakes of his new environment.
Over the following seasons, Godfrey amassed more than 100 Premier League appearances. He faced elite forwards, adapted to different managers, and built a reputation as a strong, athletic, front-foot defender who could handle the pace and power of the division.
Then came a new challenge. In 2024, he headed to Italy, signing for Atalanta and stepping into the tactical maze of Serie A. The move broadened his football education again, exposing him to a league where defensive detail is scrutinised on every phase of play.
The second half of last season took him in yet another direction. Godfrey joined Danish Superliga side Brøndby on loan, adding a different style and tempo to his experience, and showing a willingness to move, adapt, and keep playing rather than sit still.
McInnes gets his man
Rangers manager Derek McInnes was clear about what he believes the club has secured.
“Ben is a player who has competed at a very high level throughout his career,” he said. “He’s played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him.
“He’s a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad. We’re pleased to get him in, and I’m looking forward to working with him in the season ahead.”
The emphasis is obvious: experience, athleticism, presence. Rangers are not gambling on potential; they are backing a defender who has already survived and succeeded in some of Europe’s most demanding environments.
For Godfrey, this is a new stage and a fresh pressure. For Rangers, it is a statement that the coming season is not about transition. It is about silverware, just as their new signing insists it should be.
