Barcelona Target Micky van de Ven as Spurs Stand Firm
The summer market has barely drawn breath, yet the battle lines are already clear. At Tottenham, the message is simple: hands off Micky van de Ven.
Sky Sports report that Barcelona are among several heavyweight clubs tracking the Dutch defender’s situation in north London. Van de Ven has held talks with Spurs over a new deal, with only two years left on his current contract and no agreement in place. Tottenham’s stance is firm. At 25, and with Roberto De Zerbi describing him as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, he is central to their rebuild and not a player they want drifting towards a vulnerable contract position.
De Zerbi’s Spurs are quietly reshaping their core. Andrew Robertson and Marco Senesi have already arrived on free transfers, while Jan Paul van Hecke has joined in a £52m move from Brighton. Now, they are pushing to add 17-year-old Anderlecht midfielder Nathan de Cat, muscling in on a race that already includes Manchester United. Tottenham’s spine is being rebuilt with pace, power and age on its side.
Greenwood’s price, Marseille’s problem
Across the Channel, Mason Greenwood’s future is being dragged into the financial realities of Marseille’s books. L’Equipe report that both Arsenal and Tottenham are monitoring the 24-year-old, who left Manchester United for the Ligue 1 club in 2024.
From 1 July, Greenwood’s contract will include a release clause of around £52m, despite an internal valuation closer to £69m. Marseille, under pressure to sell to comply with FFP, may not get to argue too hard over the higher figure. For Premier League clubs hunting a forward entering his peak years, the numbers will be tempting.
Arsenal’s double track: wonderkid and World Cup winner
Arsenal’s recruitment drive is running on two very different tracks. At one end, the future. Georgia Under-21 international Andria Bartishvili has been tipped for a move to the Emirates. The 17-year-old, out of contract at the end of the year, has already drawn comparisons in his homeland with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. BBC Sport claim Arsenal want to move early with a pre-contract offer, trying to steal a march on a talent whose price will only rise once he leaves his teens behind.
At the other end, the now. The Independent report that Arsenal are preparing a major bid for France World Cup star Bradley Barcola. Fresh from scoring his first World Cup goal in Les Bleus’ 3-1 win over Senegal and coming off another Champions League-winning campaign with Paris Saint-Germain, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder sits near the top of the Gunners’ list. Arsenal are said to be working through the “necessary details” before formalising their interest with an official offer. It is a move that would underline their intent to add goals and incision behind the striker.
United: contract calls and midfield targets
Manchester United’s summer is already layered with difficult decisions. One of the most delicate involves Luke Shaw. According to reports, United are ready to offer the 30-year-old a new contract, but on a reduced salary compared to his current deal. Shaw, who joined from Southampton in 2014 and last extended his deal in 2023, remains an important figure at Old Trafford, yet the club’s wage structure and long-term planning are forcing a harder line.
In midfield, United’s search is widening. Sky Sport in Italy claim Croatia international Martin Baturina has emerged as a target after catching the eye with a clever equaliser against England. The Como midfielder, guided in Serie A by Cesc Fabregas, produced six goals and three assists in 29 league appearances last season. His versatility is part of the attraction: Baturina has operated as a false nine, on the left wing, as a No 10 and as a deeper playmaker. United want more craft and flexibility in the middle of the pitch; he ticks both boxes.
There is also the one that got away, at least for now. Elliot Anderson’s name has been tied to United for months, but the club stepped back from the race, citing the huge financial package required. The valuation hovers around £130m. Harry Maguire, though, has no doubts about the 21-year-old’s level. Speaking after England’s World Cup win over Croatia, where Anderson and Declan Rice shone together, Maguire said Anderson “reminds me of Declan Rice in some aspects in terms of his profile” and praised his ability to drive with the ball, score goals and play across the midfield roles from six to 10. United may have cooled, yet the market for that profile rarely does.
Real Madrid’s defensive puzzle and Enzo obsession
Real Madrid’s summer plan reads like a shopping list for an entirely new back line. They have already brought in Ibrahima Konaté and Marc Cucurella, but the hunt for another central defender continues. At the same time, ESPN report that Enzo Fernández remains a priority target. Madrid’s admiration for the Argentine dates back to his World Cup-winning exploits with Argentina while at Benfica, and interest has not dimmed during his time at Chelsea.
One name, though, looks to be slipping away. Riccardo Calafiori, fresh from a Premier League-winning season with Arsenal, has drawn interest from Madrid among others. Yet Andrea Berta’s £86m valuation is a major obstacle. With £52m already spent on Cucurella and a £78m bid lodged for Rúben Dias, the idea of adding another defender at that price feels remote. Even for Real Madrid, there are limits.
El Clásico tensions already brewing
Cucurella’s switch from Chelsea to Real Madrid has not just turned heads in England. In Spain, it has lit the fuse for the next chapter of El Clásico. His Spain team-mate Dani Olmo, who plays for Barcelona, admitted the move surprised the national squad. Speaking at the World Cup, Olmo said “we didn’t expect it” and joked that while he is happy for his friend, Cucurella “is going to have to suffer in the league and so will we.”
Olmo also warned that Lamine Yamal will be hunting him when Barça and Madrid meet. Yamal, already a nightmare for full-backs across La Liga, will relish the duel with a man he knows well from the national team camp. The rivalry writes its own stories; this one is already taking shape.
Liverpool revisit Thuram as Juventus open the door
At Liverpool, the midfield carousel spins again. Corriere dello Sport report that Khephren Thuram is back on the club’s transfer list. Juventus, needing to balance the books, are prepared to sell and may accept a fee between £35m and £39m.
Thuram has also been linked with Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, but indications are he is not keen on a Middle East move at this stage of his career. That reluctance hands European clubs, Liverpool included, a clear opening. For a side still tweaking its midfield blend, a powerful, progressive option at that price is hard to ignore.
Everton weigh up Barry interest
Not all decisions this summer will be driven by superclub ambition. At Everton, the debate over Thierno Barry is more nuanced. The Liverpool Echo report that the club may be willing to part with the striker after a mixed but ultimately promising debut season under David Moyes.
Barry’s confidence grew as the campaign wore on, and he ended with eight goals in 38 Premier League appearances. Respectable numbers for a first year, and enough to attract the attention of RB Leipzig, according to The Times. No official bid has been made, yet Everton’s hierarchy are ready to make a judgement call if one lands. Keep a forward whose trajectory is upward, or cash in to address other areas? For a club constantly juggling finances and ambition, it is the kind of call that shapes seasons.
The window is young, the rumours loud, and the money already moving. The question now is which of these early storylines harden into deals – and which become the missed chances everyone spends next season talking about.
