Barcelona Eyes João Cancelo Amid Financial Negotiations
Barcelona’s pursuit of João Cancelo has flickered back into life. What looked like a hard financial wall is starting to crack.
Al-Hilal, who had planted a firm €15 million tag on the defender, are now softening. Mundo Deportivo report that the Saudi club are prepared to climb down from that figure after a steady stream of talks, with Jorge Mendes once again in the middle of it all, working the lines between Riyadh and Barcelona.
This isn’t a routine negotiation. It’s being driven by a player who has made his position brutally clear.
Cancelo pushes for Camp Nou stay
At 32, Cancelo has found something close to footballing peace at Camp Nou. He has become a key piece in Barcelona’s build-up, a full-back who plays like a playmaker, and he has not hidden his wish to stay where he is.
The message from his camp is blunt: he does not want to go back to Al-Hilal.
His frustration with his time in Saudi Arabia is already on the record. Cancelo has spoken of broken promises over his registration for the Saudi league list, saying he was told one thing and then left out when it mattered. He has been clear that he feels he carried the blame publicly, while insisting he kept his word and his principles.
That experience has left scars. His relationship with current Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi is described as non-existent. No connection, no dialogue, no future. Whether Inzaghi stays or goes, the feeling from Cancelo’s side is the same: a return to Riyadh is off the table.
For him, the path is simple. Spain, Barcelona, and Hansi Flick.
Mendes juggling Barca’s summer puzzle
While Cancelo’s case sits at the top of the pile, Mendes has more than one file open at Barcelona.
Marc Casado’s future is under review, with Al-Hilal emerging as a possible destination. The midfielder does not feature in Flick’s long-term plans, and his move could help grease the wheels of the broader relationship between the two clubs.
Up front, Mendes is also circling around Barcelona’s striker dilemma. Darwin Núñez is being floated as a low-cost option if the club cannot pull off a move for their preferred target, Julián Álvarez. The hierarchy at Camp Nou want Álvarez, but the financial reality may drag them towards a cheaper, more opportunistic solution. Núñez fits that description.
Mendes, as ever, is trying to connect the dots.
Left flank congestion and the Cucurella question
While Cancelo is naturally a right-back, his Barcelona story this season has been written largely on the opposite side. He has spent much of the 2025–26 campaign operating from the left, cutting infield, overloading midfield zones, and giving Flick tactical flexibility.
That makes Barcelona’s defensive market search intriguing.
Marc Cucurella, a La Masia product now at Chelsea, is understood to be open to a return to Spain. Barcelona are monitoring his situation, aware that a move would bring back a homegrown full-back who knows the club and the league.
But there is a problem of numbers. Alejandro Balde is already in place. Cancelo has been filling in on that flank. Add Cucurella to that mix and the left side becomes crowded, perhaps excessively so for a squad already wrestling with salary limits and squad balance.
Barcelona’s decision-makers now face a delicate equation: secure Cancelo on a reduced fee, weigh up a sentimental yet strategic move for Cucurella, and find room for a new forward, all while staying within tight financial lines.
The negotiations with Al-Hilal may soon reveal how bold they are prepared to be.
