Barcelona Challenge Arsenal and PSG for Julián Álvarez
Barcelona have moved from admiration to action in the race for Julián Álvarez – and that shift has thrown down a direct challenge to Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.
The Catalan club, under Hansi Flick and guided in the market by Deco, are preparing their first formal offer for the Atlético Madrid striker after a series of meetings with his representatives in Barcelona this week. The plan is clear: a straight cash bid, no makeweights, no swaps. Just money on the table for one of the most decorated forwards of his generation.
Barcelona make their move
Fabrizio Romano revealed that Barcelona, having already sat down with Álvarez’s camp, are now ready to send an official proposal. The Argentina international has already informed Atlético of his desire to leave, having rejected a new contract months ago. The message from the player’s side is firm: it is time for a new chapter.
Reports in Catalonia detail how Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, and fellow representative Andy Bara met Barça officials at a Barcelona hotel on Wednesday afternoon. That summit, described as positive, has accelerated the process. Mundo Deportivo say the player’s camp believe their strong relationship with Atlético could help “unlock” a deal, even with tensions over price.
Sport add more colour: Deco and Hidalgo talked for more than four hours as Barça mapped out how to structure an offer that can test Atlético’s resolve without breaking their own fragile financial framework. The figure they are working towards is around €90m plus bonuses – a huge outlay, but still well short of Atlético’s stance.
Because in Madrid, the line is tough. Sky Sports report that Atlético want €150m for Álvarez. That is the number they have placed on a 26-year-old in his prime, a serial winner who has lifted almost everything there is to win at club and international level.
Arsenal’s long game under threat
All of this lands directly in the middle of Arsenal’s long-laid plans.
Back in January 2026, TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey revealed that Mikel Arteta and Arsenal’s hierarchy had already opened talks with Álvarez’s representatives, with a summer move in mind. The Gunners, fresh from winning the Premier League and preparing for a Champions League final against PSG, see him as the striker to elevate an already title-winning side into a dominant force.
Those conversations have not gone away. On May 25, Bailey reported that Álvarez’s camp had again told Atlético that the forward wants to leave, and that both Arsenal and PSG “have received encouragement” that he is open to their projects if Barcelona cannot put together a viable package.
That is the tightrope now. Barcelona are pushing, but must navigate their financial limits. Arsenal and PSG wait, knowing that if Barça’s €90m-plus-bonuses offer falls short of Atlético’s demands, the door could swing open for them.
A €150m problem
From Atlético’s perspective, this is a seller’s dream – at least on paper. Multiple European heavyweights circling a striker in his peak years, a player who has already proved he can handle the pressure of Manchester City, Argentina and the Champions League.
But it is also a test of how far anyone is prepared to go.
€150m is the benchmark Atlético have set. Barcelona’s opening proposal, according to Sport, will land around €90m with add-ons. That gap is significant. Negotiations, sources at Wednesday’s meeting warned, will not be quick or easy, and certainly not comparable to the relatively straightforward Anthony Gordon deal.
PSG, armed with resources and in need of star power, are “determined to make a strong push” for Álvarez. Arsenal, meanwhile, are monitoring every twist, ready to pounce if the numbers fall into their range and if their sporting project – Premier League champions and Champions League finalists – can trump the lure of Barcelona’s badge.
A striker built for the big stage
Álvarez’s appeal is obvious. He is not just prolific; he is proven when the stakes are highest.
At Manchester City, he collected two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and a Champions League crown under Pep Guardiola. With Argentina, he has already built the kind of honours list many players never touch: the 2022 World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024. He has scored, pressed, and worked his way into the heart of every team he has joined.
That profile explains the scramble. Clubs are not guessing what he might become. They know exactly what he is.
A three-way race with no easy winner
So the stage is set.
Barcelona are about to put their first bid in writing, confident in their relationships and in the player’s admiration for the club, but constrained by their finances and Atlético’s hardline valuation. Arsenal have done the groundwork, spoken to the player’s camp and can offer a project built on stability, a rising squad and a manager with a clear vision. PSG bring financial muscle and the promise of being the next attacking centrepiece in Paris.
One striker. Three giants. An asking price that dares someone to blink first.
If Barcelona’s opening offer is rejected and the talks drag on, does that give Arsenal the opening they have been patiently waiting for? Or will PSG’s determination turn this into a straight financial shootout?
The answer to that question will shape not just Álvarez’s future, but the attacking landscape at the very top of European football.
