Arsenal Signs World-Class Full-Back Ona Batlle on Free Transfer

Arsenal have pulled off one of the standout moves of the women’s summer window, signing Spain international Ona Batlle on a free transfer after her departure from Barcelona.

The 27-year-old full-back has agreed a four-year deal in north London, with an option for an extra year, in a move that underlines Arsenal’s ambition to close the gap at the very top of the European game.

From Champions League glory to Emirates dreams

Batlle arrives as a serial winner. In three years back at Barcelona, she became a key part of a juggernaut side that collected three straight league titles and two Champions League crowns, including their triumph in May.

She made 114 appearances in that spell, a relentless presence on the flank, and started the 2025 Champions League final that Barcelona lost to Arsenal – a night that now reads like a turning point rather than a footnote. The defender who once tried to shut Arsenal down will now drive them forward.

Now, the stage changes. The stadium too.

“Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can't wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players,” Batlle said. “I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”

A career built on constant elevation

Batlle’s journey has rarely taken the easy route. A graduate of Barcelona’s academy, she left in search of senior football and made her professional debut with Madrid CFF in 2017. From there she earned regular top-flight minutes at Levante, sharpening the aggressive, front-foot style that has become her trademark.

Her rise accelerated in England. Manchester United signed her in 2020, and Batlle quickly became one of the Women’s Super League’s standout full-backs, making 77 appearances and establishing herself as a modern, two-way defender: relentless in the press, fearless in possession, and always willing to surge forward.

By the time Barcelona brought her home, she was no longer a prospect. She was an established Spain international and one of the most coveted defenders in the game.

Global pedigree, winning mentality

Batlle’s international résumé matches the club honours. She has already played 76 times for Spain, part of the generation that lifted the World Cup in 2023 and then pushed England all the way before finishing runners-up at Euro 2025.

Recognition has followed. She earned a place in the FIFA Best XI in both 2024 and 2025, confirmation from her peers and coaches of her standing in the world game. It is understood she signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal earlier this year, a long-term plan finally made public.

For manager Renee Slegers, this is a cornerstone signing.

“I'm delighted that we've been able to bring Ona to the club,” Slegers said. “She's a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She's a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”

Inside the club, the move is seen as a statement.

Arsenal’s director of women’s football Clare Wheatley added: “Ona's track record at both club and international level speaks for itself. She's a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We're delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal.”

Number 22 and a clear message

Batlle will wear the number 22 shirt at Arsenal, a simple detail that still carries weight: this is not a depth signing, but a player expected to shape the team’s identity on and off the ball.

Arsenal have chased trophies on multiple fronts in recent seasons. With one of the world’s elite full-backs now locked in on a long-term deal, the question is no longer whether they are building something serious – it is how far this group, with Batlle tearing down the flanks, can push the European elite.
