Kylian Mbappé Reflects on Missed Penalty Chaos

Kylian Mbappé does not often look rattled from twelve yards. This time, he did.

The France captain lifted the lid on the chaotic sequence that preceded his missed penalty, admitting the confusion “distracted” him but refusing to hide behind the officials.

“I didn't shoot well,” Mbappé told RMC Sport, stripping the moment back to its simplest truth before unpacking the mess that followed.

“The referee tells me there's a penalty. So I ask him if the VAR check is complete, and he says yes,” he explained.

“From that moment on, we transition to Ousmane, who gives me the ball. Then he comes to me, when I'm already focused, to tell me there's no penalty,” Mbappé said.

The striker described the surreal pause that followed: ball in hand, mind racing, the penalty spot suddenly a question mark instead of a destination.

“So I don't know, I pick up the ball, put it down again, thinking there's a penalty, and he tells me, 'No, wait, there's an action two minutes earlier that needs to be checked.'”

Time stretched. Certainty vanished. The stop-start nature of modern officiating had taken center stage at the worst possible moment for the man expected to decide it.

Mbappé did not spare himself in the aftermath.

“But that's how it is, I let myself get distracted,” he admitted. “I've certainly gone through a lot of scenarios about how to concentrate on a penalty, but I hadn't considered this particular scenario yet.”

The episode, he suggested, is no longer an anomaly but a sign of the times.

“It's a scenario we'll have to consider because the referee can tell you there's a penalty, but then two minutes later he can tell you there isn't. I don't know how long it lasted. It's part of the new football. It's the new football with VAR, you have to adapt.”

On a night when technology and hesitation collided with human routine, Mbappé’s miss became more than a single kick. It was a snapshot of a game still learning to live with its own new rules — and of a superstar determined to adjust faster than anyone else.
