Amara Nallo Joins HJK Helsinki on Loan for Development

Liverpool defender Amara Nallo will spend the rest of the year on loan with HJK Helsinki, handed a fresh stage – and a clean slate – in Finland.

The 19-year-old centre-back has agreed a temporary move that runs to the end of the Veikkausliiga season, with HJK deep in the business end of their campaign. With the Finnish top flight running from April to late October, Nallo arrives in time for the final six rounds of the regular season and the decisive split, when the 12-team league divides into two sections for the run-in.

He may not have to wait long to get started. Nallo has been registered for European competition and named in HJK’s squad for their Europa Conference League second qualifying round first leg against Coleraine on Thursday evening. A debut could come under continental lights rather than in the league.

For Liverpool, this is a calculated step in the development of a highly regarded but raw defender signed from West Ham United in 2023. Nallo has spent his Anfield career to date largely with the under-21s, learning the club’s defensive demands away from the main stage.

His senior bow, though, was unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. Thrown on late in a Champions League dead rubber at PSV Eindhoven in January 2025, he lasted just four minutes before being sent off, becoming the youngest player ever dismissed in Liverpool’s history.

The next chance brought more pain. His second first-team appearance, off the bench in a League Cup tie against Crystal Palace at Anfield last October, ended in another red card after only 12 minutes. Two cameos, two dismissals, and a reputation no young defender wants.

He did finally get through a game unscathed. Introduced for the final 16 minutes of Liverpool’s Champions League win over Qarabag in January, Nallo saw out his third outing without drama, a small but important step in restoring confidence and trust.

Around those brief and turbulent appearances, he has been on the fringes of the senior picture. The centre-back has made the matchday squad nine more times, most recently for the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield in April, without getting off the bench.

Now comes a different kind of test. In Helsinki, Nallo will find a title-chasing club, meaningful minutes and the scrutiny that comes with European qualifiers. For a teenager whose early senior minutes have been defined by red cards, the next few months in Finland offer something far more valuable: the chance to be defined by his defending instead.
