Alvaro Arbeloa Targets Cesar Palacios for Fulham

Alvaro Arbeloa is wasting no time putting his stamp on Fulham. And, predictably, his gaze has turned back towards Valdebebas.

The former Real Madrid full-back, now in charge at Craven Cottage, has asked Fulham’s hierarchy to explore a move for Cesar Palacios, the Castilla attacking midfielder he knows better than most. As he shapes his first Premier League squad, Arbeloa wants a familiar creative fulcrum at the heart of it.

Palacios at a crossroads

Palacios has begun pre-season with Real Madrid’s first team, training under the glare of the Santiago Bernabeu. Yet everyone involved knows the likely outcome: his future, at least for next season, lies away from the Spanish champions.

The 21-year-old thought that decision had already been made. Earlier in the summer he reached a verbal agreement with Como, with both player and representatives convinced the deal was on the verge of completion. The path looked clear, the project attractive, the minutes seemingly guaranteed.

Then it collapsed. No contracts signed, no deal sealed, and Palacios was suddenly back where he started.

Since that breakdown, interest has not been in short supply. FC Porto and Osasuna have both made their admiration known, but neither enquiry has advanced into anything resembling a final agreement. For now, Palacios is back at Valdebebas, weighing his options carefully with Real Madrid, knowing that the next move could define the trajectory of his career.

Arbeloa’s trusted lieutenant

This is not a speculative punt from a coach trawling highlight reels. Arbeloa has already lived the Palacios experience from the dugout.

He managed the youngster at Castilla and then with the Real Madrid first team. It was Arbeloa who handed Palacios his senior debut for Los Blancos in January, a show of faith that led to seven appearances in total last season. He has seen him at close quarters: his timing between the lines, his eye for a pass, his temperament on bigger stages.

The problem in Madrid is simple and brutal. Pathways are crowded. With Real Madrid stacked in attacking areas, the prospect of regular senior minutes for Palacios is slim. His contract runs until 2027, which gives the club control, but does little to ease the logjam in the short term.

That is where Fulham come in. Arbeloa believes he can offer what Madrid currently cannot: a genuine shot at regular top-flight football, under a coach who already trusts him.

Fulham’s Madrid connection

Palacios is not the only name on Arbeloa’s wish list from his old home. The Spaniard has also asked Fulham to keep a close eye on Gonzalo Garcia and Franco Mastantuono, two more highly rated talents emerging from the Real Madrid system.

He is not simply raiding his former club for the sake of it. Arbeloa is trying to build a dressing room with players who understand his demands, his ideas, his tempo. Familiar faces can accelerate that process, especially in a league as unforgiving as the Premier League.

There is, however, a new gatekeeper at the Bernabeu.

Jose Mourinho, Arbeloa’s replacement at Real Madrid, intends to run his own inspection of the club’s young prospects in pre-season before signing off on any exits. That includes Palacios, Garcia and Mastantuono. Only after Mourinho has taken his close look will Madrid decide who can leave, and on what terms.

For Fulham and Arbeloa, the message is clear: the interest is real, the plan is drawn, but the green light still belongs to Madrid.

If it comes, Palacios could swap Valdebebas for west London and reunite with the coach who first trusted him on the biggest stage. And for a 21-year-old stuck between promise and opportunity, that kind of reunion might be exactly what turns potential into something far more concrete.
