2026 World Cup: Full Schedule, Results, Groups, and Viewing Info

2026 World Cup Overview

The qualifying playoffs have wrapped up, confirming the full lineup of 48 teams for this summer's World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament kicked off with a draw in December that assigned 42 qualified teams into groups, leaving six playoff winners to fill remaining spots.

United States, as one of the hosts, automatically secured a place in Group D and started strong with a victory over Paraguay on June 12. Their upcoming group matches include clashes with Australia and Türkiye.

Canada competes in Group B, opening their campaign with a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina. They'll face Qatar and Switzerland before the group stage ends.

Mexico had the privilege of hosting the tournament opener, defeating South Africa 2-0 at Estadio Azteca. Their group opponents are Korea Republic and Czechia in Group A.

Tournament Format

The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three group-stage matches to decide who advances. The top two teams from each group proceed to the knockout round, joined by the eight best third-place finishers. Tie-breakers follow this order: goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, fair play points, and drawing lots if necessary.

This edition introduces a new structure aiming for competitive balance. Two distinct paths to the semifinals prevent the top-ranked teams from meeting before the final, assuming they win their groups. For example, the highest-ranked Spain and defending champions Argentina occupy separate paths, as do France and England. Teams from the same confederation can't share a group, except European teams.
